I noticed that someone installed a bug screen over the furnace vents. It sounded logical to me. I started looking for the part and visited the manufacturer's website. Here is what it said:

" Suburban does not approve - nor do we recommend - using the aftermarket screens being sold to cover the outside vent cap. This restricts the exhaust and intake air, resulting in improper burner operation and a potentially unsafe condition".

Looking at the picture of the "after market" screen (found it at Camping World) ...it seems unlikely to me that it restricts the airflow to any great degree.

Any one care to weigh in? You experienced folks are the ones I rely on!

Well, I don't use them, but it is mostly because I'm too cheap and too lazy to put them in.  I carry some pipe cleaners (for tobacco pipes) which are good for a lot of things - like cleaning bugs out of the openings of the various appliances, Coleman lantern, etc.

I have used them for years with no problem.  The main thing that they keep out are wasps.  Wasps, especially the ones that build a nest out of mud, can cause a lot of problems.

Terry, good to hear I just bought screens for both my furnace and water heater vents.
Thanks

I think Suburban has to say that because they have no control over the type of screen or size of the screen openings. If the holes are big enough to allow adequate airflow, but small enough to block pesky wasps, yellow jackets and bees down here, everything should be okay. Like others here, I use screens with no issues whatsoever.

Psaman,

Thanks for weighing in. I thought Suburban was a bit over the top with that advice. Could you let me know where you got the screens? I haven't found anything remotely like them on line but then again sometimes it is trying to find a needle in a haystack! Again, many thanks for your advice.

Tomorrow I'm taking the Pod out camping so I went to check it out.  I forgot to cover the vents for the fridge.....paper wasp built themselves a home in there!Angry

Terry,

Do you happen to have pictures of the screens you have on your pod? I am having trouble locating some online. Any information is appreciated.

I know just what you mean about the dirt dabbing wasp nests..we get them in the rafters of our barn and have to regularly clear them out so they don't bite the horses!

Take a look at the pictures above.  Camping World has them.  Most, if not all, dealers would have them also.
