At 6-1 I asked myself the same shower question - never thought I'd shower sitting down! Enjoy your new Pod, soon you'll be counting down to your next trip like all of us. |

AWESOME!.....great decision, I'm sure you will not regret! Its easy to use, for what it is, it is pretty 'basic' and very user friendly, you don't need a 6 volume manual to 'drive' this baby! As to the shower, move slow and careful  Again, congrats!!!!!!!

Well the decision was made and we pick up our 2012 R 177 on Saturday. We couldn't be more excited! We do want to know how the heck you take a shower in that bad boy but maybe that a topic for a different discussion thread. We really do want to thank everyone for all of your input. You made the decision much easier and we felt much more informed. Now if somebody will just show us how to use the thing we'll be all set. There don't seem to be any poles to hold it up like we had with our Eureka 10X12 tent.

Creel talked about solid walls. I used to love the roominess of my pop-up but I longed for solid insulated walls. When I decided to sell the fifth wheel and downgrade, I thought about another pop-up, but not for very long. I didn't want the hard work setting up, and I wanted solid walls. In my opinion, for whatever it's worth, I don't see how tent walls can possibly have the same lifetime as solid walls.

Hi Chuck,
From our point of view we like the idea of being DRY when it is raining. Funny how we both remember warm, sunny days camping with our parents when we were young but as soon as we got married (forty years ago this year!) it started raining every time we camped.
We also have problems with bears. In fact my son had to rescue his kids ages 6 and 3, TWICE from two different bears on one weekend last summer. We were in the next campsite and it was a busy campground. They cut short their trip by a couple of days as he had troluble sleeping in their tent the next two nights. I am pretty sure they are going to take us up on our offer to share the Gastropod with them and I will feel better thinking of my grandchildren safe at night.
The last reason we chose the 177 was the fact that we will have locks, such as they are. The world is not becoming a safer place and we have a few not-so-great memories of scary whooping and hollering nights.
After all that, we still love camping and hope to do lots more.

I'm sure that materials used in popups and pullouts have come a long way and obviously they sell, since most RV manufacturers who built compact models still have them in their lineup.
But I can't help but feel that there's where a weakness could be/is, in that canvass material. Temperature inside the RV on a cold day is another thing, canvass just does not have the same insulating factor as what solid walls have. Windy day/night, canvass moving and flapping, no matter how taught it is, it will still move and flap to some extent. Setup, I just like pulling up at the site, unhitch, level out, connect services if available, move the slide out and voila!! We looked at a popup and pullout before we bought the RP 177, once all set up, they do seem roomier and bigger, but, we did not buy an RV to live in it! So, for us, from a general comfort and security point of view, a solid wall RV far outweighs anything a pop up and/or pullout can offer. Hope this helps.

Creel, thanks. Other than bears, which we also have here in WI, what other objections do you have to the "tent" foldout? I'd really like to hear your thoughts. I can't help but feel like we are overlooking potential problems. I know tears, leaking, mold/mildew have been assumed concerns that we have but I'm not sure that we should be concerned about those things although after years of tent camping and spending too much time repairing/drying out/cleaning up tents, I can't help but think that there would be similar issues. I guess that I'm really trying to talk myself out of the 191T but I'm also trying to be objective. It's not easy when your as opinionated as I am.

being a VERY happy owner of the RP 177 HRE, thats what I would recommend. I've never been a big fan of popup or 'pullout/foldout' style campers, not to mention here in MT, they are not recommended because of bears. Solid walls are a better bet here.
Good luck, whichever model you end up with, I'm sure you'll enjoy it and have a great time taking it out!

Well, this afternoon we go to the dealer for a final comparison of the RP 177 and the Surveyor 191T. Then it's decision time. Anyone have any last guidance?
