Absolutely - if you are on a long trip you need to be able to top the tires off on the road.  I have a 12 volt air pump and a tire plug kit in every car.

Just a thought -

Maybe ALL R-Podders should carry a portable tire compressor?? Cheap - $40 to $60, also serve to quickly check tire pressures. I have a 'Viair' because of the reviews, I am sure many other brands are equally good.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. You might want to consider a tire pressure monitoring system. They run some where in the $200 range and will monitor not only the tires on the pod but also on the tow vehicle.

I had the same thing happen ,except my tire blew out taking the fender with it. Listed in another post. Tire had 5k 2011 171 pod .checked tire prior to trip & looked great. Pressure cked while on trip( take pump with for this) call 1-574- 642-3119 ext. #209. This is forest river pod parts. Fender is $50-55 plus shipping and lights are $5 ea. Additional. You have to drill holes for lights. Fender measurements are lenght 30" width 10.25" height 12". If you order from fr have the pods serial number available. I have been checking on the net and have not found an exact match yet . l have been checking galvanized & aluminum fenders. I may go bigger since l put risers on my pod. Only problem is that most fenders are only 9" wide. I have not made a decision yet. No other damage to the pod other than same wiring to new fender.

I was on the highway and was glad not to get smashed by passing traffic. Did not feel like walking back at least quarter mile and cross into the medium to retrieve a possible destroyed
fender. It wasn't worth it to me. Temps were also in the 90's. I always bring 2 spares since
I have another trailer that takes same size tires&rim.spare on back of pod & one in p- up bed.

We also have a 39 foot Montana 5th wheel and had a blow out at 1,200 miles. Replaced all 4 tires with Goodyear G614 G rated. These would be way over kill for a pod but the most important thing is to get tires that are made in the good old USA not China bombs.

Also check the tire pressure every day before leaving where you spent the night.

I have a tire pressure monitoring system on the 5er but don't think I will go to the expense for the R179 we are getting.

I have to agree with Doug. It's a small price to pay for safety and peace of mind.

6 years is the max for trailer tires.  At that point dry rot causes problems like this.  Replace all 3.

Just had the same thing happen to me. 2009 176T. Had noticed something not right looking in the mirror on the way to Myrtle Beach this weekend. Checked tire pressure. 45 some brought back to 50 max recommended. Took back roads home instead of through Charleston and bridges.(headed to Ridgeland,SC) last 14 miles had to jump on Interstate. tread came of, took fender and gray water valve and connections. Stay inflated so drove to the closest exit and changed at a gas station Lot. Bought it used a year ago. And it had Goodyears marathons on it. Original brand on the spare, Now should I replace both or was it just a tire failure?

More specifically, did you re-secure it where the existing holes were?  With only new fiberglass in those locations I'd worry about it holding unless you filled the holes with something else behind the fiberglass.
