Its not too early to be early to be thinking of warming our bones and our attitudes. I'm curious if R-Poders would like to share past or planned winter camping destinations? What are your favorites and where would you return? Anticipation and planning is half of the fun!

Mustang Island State Park for us in the winter and the wife likes to go North in the Summer. It's generally the Hill Country, Big Bend, or Ft Davis for us in the spring and fall.

Galveston Island State Park looks interesting. Has anyone had experience with that? Also I'm thinking about Buccaneer State Park in Mississippi.

For another couple hours driving time, Mustang Island is a whole lot better IMHO than Galveston Island. Port Aransas, nearby, has great seafood places and Corpus Christi isn't too far away if you feel the need for a little more of an urban environment. And South Padre Island is pretty popular with Winter Texans, but that's an awfully long drive.

Agreed, SPI has the best beaches, however, if you only have a few days it is a very long haul all the way down to the most Southern tip. Mustang Island State Park is OK, but because the campsites have close sand dunes to the North and South it can get a little bugy, sometimes after a rain it can be loaded with mosquitoes! For us, the best beach camping is right on the Port A beach. A beach parking pass can be had almost anywhere in town for $12.00 good for the calendar year. The pass allows you to camp on the beach for 3 consecutive nights, repeatable every three weeks, all year long. We dump our tanks at the State Park 12 miles down the road. Beach front property with a view for $4.00 a night, right on the beach! Info here: Port Aransas |

In past years several of us have gotten together in January at French Creek State Park in central PA. The trip from almost 2 years ago I pulled the whole way in a blizzard. That was an experience.

Hmm, Pennsylvania or Mustang Island in January, that's a tough call.

Okay quite a few years ago I spent a year near Dallas Texas and as I understand it Dallas is colder than the Gulf Coast and I never did see any weather that I would have to refer to as winter. The had a long fall and spring but no winter.
This is November of last year first snowfall looking out my front door. |
