I am preparing for an epic 15,000 mile roundtrip. I am trying to decide on the best satellite antenna and whether to mount it on the roof or keep it portable.

I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

My 2ยข.
Portable provides you a lot more options on placement, hence, more options to gain a signal. I believe all of the SAT HDTV is in S,-SW Geosynchronous orbit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia so having the dish on a tripod with 100" of cable will allow you to aim it that way, no matter where you are camping (parked). That said, there is no guarantees that obstructions will not hinder your signal, even if it's on top of the POD.

Dang, a 15,000 mile trip, tell more about that...coast to coast?

If you are doing this epic trip in a Pod, there isn't room on the roof for a mounted satellite dish, except maybe on a 179.

Our trip starts out in the Shenandoah Valley, VA. Travel across to Phoenix for two weeks with the grandkids. Then a border to border tour on US 89, one of my Must Do's. Then Banff and Jasper National Parks in Canada. From there, on to Alaska. Four weeks in Alaska, and back down through the Inside Passage, through Seattle and down Highway 1. Back for another two weeks in Phoenix and return to Virginia.

I retire in three weeks and this is something I have been anticipating for many years.

It will be a great exercise for marital patience! :) Four dogs along for the adventure also. Three little guys and my favorite long haired shepherd mix Maggi.

Wish us luck. The outdoor screen room will be the savior of our marriage, I think.

I purchased the Dish ReceiverVIP211z with theTailgater antenna from CW and the system works great at least in the mountains of San Diego.

I should have mentioned that it is portable but fully automatic as far as finding itself.  I put mine on the ground close to my truck and run a locking cable thru my truck's bumber just to insure that it doesn't sprout feet.  Sounds like you may be in Alaska early summer.  Be sure to take lots of bug spray and pick up some mosquito netting hats; you'll need them.  I've taken a two tripper to do what you're going to do in one trip.  So Cal to Alaska and back, and a trip around the country when I retired for six months covering 45 states and some of Canada.  Enjoy!
