Hello.

I knew it would happen, if not folded up - In spite of this, I managed to bend the bracket of our trailer's entry step on a low post. It's about 1/2 inch out of line now, still 'works' but definitely the worse for the experience.

I tried to gently push the hanging bracket back into shape with a sledge hammer, but no joy, that is thick metal.

I assume I'll have to replace the whole unit,

1. Are there special tools/steps needed to remove the bolts holding the hanging bracket onto the frame, like an impact drill?

2. Do replacement steps have the bracket attaching the step to the frame?

3. Suggestions/comments are appreciated, tho my wife has already supplied the sarcastic ones so you don't have to include those.

For that type of work, a sledge isn't the tool.. You need steady leverage, a pipe wrench or large adjustable, open slightly, slide over, bend/pull steady.

If you can get it off, you might try taking it to a steel fabricator that makes things like truck bumpers.  Might also try a big vise if you have one.

there was a discussion a while back about replacing the single step with a double step.  they probably can give you good advice,
I think this is the link
