Topic: Main Harness wire gauge? Posted: 05 Apr 2016 at 10:51am |
Does anyone know the wire gauge used on the main 7-wire harness under the Rpod? I located the harness, but we had freak snow and cold before I could get under there close enough to read the info printed on the wire. I am getting supplies together to add Reverse Lights, and I want to buy some wire ahead of time.

The wires in the harness are not all the same gauge, they vary based on the load. For LED backup lights, 16g should be plenty.

I just checked with Maxxima customer service. The M42321 model uses 22AWG for it's leads. Out back at I have about 1k' of nice automotive grade XLPE 20AWG that happens to be in yellow. Debating on whether to use that.

If you're connecting your reversing lights to your tow vehicle, then you'll want your wire to be rated to match whatever fuse is in the vehicle. The LED's don't draw much, but in the case where you're wire shorts you want the vehicle's fuse to blow before your wire melts. I think general automotive wire is rated to 80C, so if you have a 15amp fuse in the vehicle, you could go as low as 18 gauge. At 1 amp, 18 gauge is still within 3% voltage drop for the length of the trailer. hmm, or as furpod says, 16g should be plenty.

If you use a lower gauge than what your vehicle's fuse will protect, then you can always add your own inline fuse with a lower amp rating.

I am just going to get some 16AWG. I might even be able to get it as a free sample from one of my suppliers, it all depends if they already have it in their actual warehouse.

Thanks for the link. The mod definitely seems doable, my biggest worry is cutting through the shell for the LED leads. Yes, I have noticed Marwayne is like a Pod Mod Jedi Master.
