Topic: 2012 177 vs 2016 178? Posted: 07 May 2016 at 2:37pm |
Good morning. I've now decided that an R-pod 177, preferably a 178 is my next adventure. I'm now debating--new or used. Generally, I can find a 2012 177 for about $13,500; a 178 for about $18,500. Trying to decide if the $5,000 is worth it. A few questions:
I've not owned a trailer before and am not yet aware of the work to get somewhere and get it set up. Two sides to the unknown--buy new so I have the warranty and service for any issues or buy used so I can test out trailering and not spend that extra $5,000. Ay ay ay. Please offer help. Obviously the 178 is desirably, but $5,000 more desirable? I can't decide. I've found a dealer that I'm really excited about--could that push me into new? |

I'm curious about where you're located. $13,500 for a 4-year-old 177 is high, IMO. We paid $12,500 for our 2014 brand new in Sept. of 2014. That was an exception deal, I believe, but still...
We were considering used but found a new one was little (if any) more than used, and like you said, you get a warranty. Consider purchasing a new one out of town, if you're willing to drive. I drove 600 miles to save thousands. Warranty work can be done by any authorized Forest River dealer, although a local dealer will typically give priority to a camper they sold (and understandably so). I would suggest continuing to shop for lower prices (both used and new); broadening your range of how far away you'd travel to buy; and sticking with a 178 over a 177, considering you will have two grandkids and sometimes another adult with you (unless you find a screamin' deal on a 177, as we did). |

I purchased a used 2012 177 and my wife and I love it. The 2012 does not have the LED lights but the original owner had done quite a few mods to it and one of them was to replace the light bulbs with LED bulbs. They had also got rid of the Jenson TV/Entertainment center and replaced it with a 16” NAXA TV/DVD combo. They installed a TV swivel bracket on the cabinet the old system was mounted on. I have bumped my head a few time but its big deal and I would not move it. I have had no problems towing my 177 with my Honda Ridgeline. The dining table turned into a bed for one person is not a problem. For 2 adults if they had to share after 2 nights I think that would be a problem.

Here's a 2015 178 advertised right here on this forum: http://rpod-owners.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=7840&title=2015-rpod-178-for-sale-12500.
I don't know if it's still available, but the Craigslist ad he links to is still up, so I'd assume it is. Looks to be in excellent condition, and has lots of extras including an R-dome. Asking $12,500. I have no idea how close this is to you, but perhaps it gives you some idea as to pricing. I really think you can do a lot better than $13,500 for a 2012 177. If nothing else, offer MUCH less to the seller and see what happens. |

LED lights can be added for $30. Outside shower for $50.
We own a highly modded 2011 177, paid $12.6K new. Even in perfect shape, well except for some hidden dog hair here and there.. and there, and there.. We have been thinking of selling, and my "in my mind" price was no where near $13.5k On the 178, is that price the "advertised" price, or "MSRP"? Have you actually talked to a salesperson? Here at our local dealer I think new 178's go for about $14.5K |
