I just finished 31 days of Campground Hosting at Turkey Run State Park, here in Indiana. Has anyone else done the "Hosting" thing? Have you thought about doing it? It was my first time. I did see 4 Pods during the month - 3 were from Illinois (2 were tent models) and not members of the forum. Of course, I HAD to tell them about the forum and brag on the good folks here! |

I have not done "workamping" so, I don't know for certain. The "Host" programs of Indiana and the National Parks are similar: You get a campsite at no charge for one month and They get an agreed upon amount of hours of "service" (work) from you. Duties/hours vary according to the needs of the park entity. |

We are members of Escapees RV Club and will be working at one of their campgrounds next year for 3 months. My husband will cook, and I will be taking reservations and registering campers. We will work a combined 20 hours a week and get a free campsite with hook-ups as "pay". Looking forward to it.

Well...I've learned to never say "never" but..... it is very unlikely. Most of the reasons are a "me" thing and what I expect/want in my camping experiences. It should be noted that I did not "sign up" to be a Host. I was a last minute fill in for the schedule folks - it was me or nobody, for the month of August. First, being parked for an entire month, in a place I am at a lot anyway (volunteering), is a loooong time. Camping ceased to be "camping" and became more like the place in which I sleep and shower, when not working. Working - I averaged over 30 hours per week. This does not include time spent assisting other campers with info, helping to repair air mattresses, etc. This may not be "typical", as Hosts are supposed to work up to 20 hours (husband/wife team = 10 hours each). The park - yearly tied with Pokagon SP for the title "Most visited (busy) Indiana Park". It's a busy place and "busting at the seams" on weekends. Combine this with a staff shortage and it becomes easy to see why I worked so much. Normally, when camping, I avoid the busier parks - preferring a more peaceful experience. The host campsite has only electrical hook ups so, I was breaking down/hitching up weekly to dump. I did not want to invest in one of the "totes" for just this experience. I could go on but, for me personally, the negatives outweighed the positives (and there were some positives). Some folks do it full time or nearly full time and like it. However, it's just not my cup of tea. |

I think I would feel the same. Like with anything that you enjoy but do too much, it becomes a job.
