Here is mine on the 180. It sits just in front of the axle and hangs no lower than the axle. You can see I lowered both brackets so the hood river tire would fit between the floor and the carrier. If your hitting this stuff on anything your trying pretty hard. On the 180 you also get the added benefit of supporting the floor in the pod, I have heard of these sagging on some pods.

So, for a HRE, which model would be best?  That is, give the most mounting flexibility.  The 217 or 218. This is for a 2015 HRE.  Or put another way, does the 218 have to hang so low or could it be modified?  I assume the mounting bracket could be cut to give a custom fit for the tire. Or does 217 give the mounting plates plenty of bolting surface with proper tire fit?

The 217 is probably your best bet. The recess between frame members is only about 4", so he spare will hang down a bit. We ended up drilling at almost the very bottom of the frame in order to make enough clearance for the spare tire.

Has anyone used or considered the BAL Retract-A-Spare?
