The middle valve should be open, parallel to the pipe, while pumping antifreeze. That allows antifreeze to flow through the hot water pipes. For storage it makes no difference how you leave them, but you should have it open again next year to flush all the AF out.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. The two way valve performs the function of two of the conventional valves. That's a simple and obvious improvement, but I can't think of any way to accomplish the objective with only one valve unless it's a fancy multi-function valve or an additional check valve is involved.

My Salem only has one valve.  Took me by surprise the first time I winterized it and I ran a test or two to be sure it didn't allow antifreeze into the WH.

Details please, Doug. Where is the valve and is it shutoff or two way? Did you have the HW faucets open?. The anode port open? How is it plumbed? Any check valves? I'm really baffled by this.

I'll have to investigate it further when I winterize in a week or two.  I believe it was at the top of the WH but I don't remember if it was 2 or 3 way.  I did not remove the anode.  I do open the hot water faucets as part of winterizing.

We used the ultrasonic rodent/mouse doohickeys in my astronomy club's observatory; haven't had any mouse problems since we started using them. I don't remember the exact brand; it's been a couple of years but I could keep looking.

Are you saying that the faucets would not shut off when you turned the pump on? That might indicate a problem with the faucets. They should shut off the same as when water is flowing through the pipes. Did you just get the R-Pod? Did the bathroom sink faucet operate properly with plain water? You may need to check with your dealer if the faucet is not operating properly to get it fixed under warranty.

Hopefully, you will find a place local to you that will do warranty work.
