I have a 2016 180 hood river, I thought the hood river editions were higher off the ground. I just looked at a 2017 new blue 180 and the floor is 3.5 " higher off the ground than mine with 2 steps. There are 3.5" welded on riser blocks on the new one and none on mine.
Did they forget to install them or is mine a little higher because of taller tires or were they an option i didn't have? I tow perfectly level and both jacks are bent already, (low driveways). And can i order them online somewhere? I'm 3 hours to the dealer. thanks John

Don't know about the HRE, but the new 180s are built higher and FR just did away with the riser option.

Your 2016 HRE has the reclocked axle, FR didn't put risers on, because it was felt they were not needed anymore.. The 2017 has a reclocked axle AND risers, because some people apparently can't keep from dragging. Our pod has neither, is as low as any pod can be, never an issue...

I bent the left rear pulling out of a gas station in Fort Bragg,CA. It still works but the threaded rod is tweaked and i have to push the jack a little to make it straight. My driveway is do-able but i have to go slow and come in at an angle or it hits. The new blue HRE has heavier duty jacks than mine also. rgds John

I have the "green" 2017 179 (not HRE) built in June 2017 and I'm assuming it has the higher axle. However because of my goofy driveway the dealer added 4" risers also. My fender is now about 7 1/2 inches above the top of the tire. The dealer also moved the stabilizers forward about 18 inches. Simply a matter of unbolting, drilling some new holes and bolting on. That was the biggest improvement I think and there's no difference in their function. Try it. Jack

Jack,
I like the stabilizer move idea. My tires are the HRE 235/75R15 off road ones and i only have 2" of clearance to the fender. and i kind of like that look. Moving the jacks would also let me keep the single step which is perfect now with two 8" steps. Also looking at this BAL unit, much tighter fit. Rgds John

Try the stabilizer move. It may save a changeover to the BAL's. I do need to add a two step unit soon. I use a portable step now that works but two steps would be better. One less thing to carry. I like the larger tires too. I wonder if the wheel bolt pattern is the same as the 14's I have now. I'll change out next year to Maxxis tires and get rid of the China "bombs" on there now. My brother works in SLO, lives in Morro Bay. I send him pictures of our blizzards and he laughs.
I tell him at least we won't fall into the ocean! Jack

Just got back from a 6500 mile trip in our new 2016 HRE RP-179, towing with a 2009 Tacoma. No issues whatsoever except a few instances on driveways where I wish we had axle risers. I contacted the FR dealer for a quoted price, but the price seems really steep for what they are (looks like C-channel about 8" x 4" with some bolt holes). I have a good friend willing to weld them up
 for me if someone can provide exact dimensions and material thickness please.Thank you,  Hank

80 degrees here in morro today, went out to the boat, but no wind, so we did this instead,  And send this pic to your brother if he hasn't seen it, it's an oldy but a goody!, That's Morro rock on the right.  |
