I've been running Bridgestone Dueler Alenza Plus tires on my 2012 Highlander. This is my third set of Bridgestone tires and I've been happy with them.

The truck we have is shod with Michelin LTX tires. They are probably not inexpensive, but they are really good, quiet, quality tires. As for the date, anything with a DOT date code of this year should be fine. I don't think there is such as thing as a tow tire. The LT tires are Light Truck and are the better ones for your Explorer than a standard passenger car tire.

Michelins are class tires, I'm a big BF Goodrich fan. That comes form mule deer hunting in AZ off road. I had a new 86 Toyota with Bridgestone Duelers, only time in my life I had 4 flat tires in the desert, the mesquite and cacti poked holes in the sidewalls.

To my knowledge there are no tow tires, lot of characteristics to tires, like plys, speed, heat etc. The right tires are a plus.
