I think 6 inches would be fine for smaller folks, my wife barely makes a depression our bedroom foam mattress. Being larger, I didn't want to take the chance of ending up lying on the plywood so we went with the 8 inch. We just tuck in a top sheet too, not worth the effort to try to crawl around getting a fitted sheet on a heavy mattress like that. We would do the same with any mattress I think.

Contrary to the advice of my doctor, I weight about 220.  The 6" dense foam mattress we got to replace the OEM doesn't come close to bottoming out on the strand board base (the OEM did bottom out).  It is easy to change the short queen fitted bottom sheet since the mattress is relatively light and easy to pick up for my wife and me.

My wife doesn't like a very firm mattress so that plays into it too. A softer mattress will compress more.

In reality, either a 6 or 8 inch foam mattress would be a good choice depending on your desired firmness level, size/weight, and tolerance for bedmaking. We're into the realm of personal preference at this point I think.
