Outer Banks is a long-standing name, but the OBX is a relatively new marketing term. I've seen the TV add Box (high rise buildings) transforming to OBX (beaches). I only recently heard "Inner Banks" used to describe the area between the outer banks and the mainland. I used to hear Ocean side and Sound side of the islands when we lived in Swansboro many years ago.

All this talk is making wanna head down east to the OBX and get away from the flat-land NC Piedmont I'm stuck in right now.

Yeah, I just used OBX for written shorthand. When speaking its still the "the outer banks". OBX has been on the license plates bere since 1999 so its really become interchangeable. NC is running out of OBX plate numbers now, they are at about 93000 out of a possible 100000 combinations.
Now is a great time to visit, the temps are near perfect with highs in the upper 70's and lows in the 60's. The water hasn't warmed up yet so it keeps things cooler than it is inland. And noreaaster season is more or less over while the stinking hurricanes are still months away, waiting for warmer water temps. |

Yes, it sounds like a great time to visit. Unfortunately, we have physical therapy for my wife's knee replacement to get done and a trip to Florida to see my parents that are both higher priority. By then, the summer high prices will be in effect followed by the increased risk of hurricanes.

Thread drift ain't all bad -
I second the people who feel the outer banks are exceptional. I'm looking forward with great anticipation to a summer of fishing the sound for 'red fish', red spotted drum. The marsh is complex and beautiful with its changing appearance under different weather conditions, the birds and other animals interesting and the fish very good eating. The next three weeks until my first trip of the year there are gonna be tough. |

Yep, its all good out here except for.....
The hurricanes The noreasters The near constant cold winds in winter and early spring The road flooding The salt corrosion The 1 1/2 hour trip to the nearest Home Depot The 3 hour trip to the nearest full service hospital.... Anyhow, none of that generally matters to visitors so welcome to the OBX!! And the new Oregon Inlet bridge is open so that's one less thing to worry about

offgrid, one more exception, don't forget about us inlander tourists crowding up Hwy 12 during the summers.
I much prefer the area you're in (what I tell people is the real Outer Banks) compared to the area north of Nags Head. While there are some neat things to see and do in the northern part, I like the undeveloped areas much better. Good to hear the new bridge is open.

I have to run up and down NC 12 3-4 times a week, 62 miles each way just to Nags Head. Winters are fine unless the nor'easters have flooded the road. In the summer I have to allow an addtional 20-30 minutes. But I don't ever complain about that, without the summer visitors the economy here would tank in a heartbeat. As it is half the folks here are on food stamps all winter.
Without the national seashore Hatteras Island would look just like Kitty Hawk. Much as the locals seem to like to complain about the park service, it has saved the island from being overrun by strip malls.
