I think you mean by "tightening" your having trouble getting it to fully closing tight? If your having trouble with that your problem most likely is that you have debris, leaves, needles, acorns, what have you in what I call the awning gutter. When your awning is extended just look or feel on the top side extended awning rail there is a channel which needs to be free of debris. You can just take a rag or what ever and run down the length of this gutter channel and clean it out and then it will close fully when you take it in. Getting the crank tool out at times can be like a game, no? LOL Try pushing up on it then rotate it back and forth to see if that helps.
