Discs don't slip, they herniate.  That is the squishy gelatinous stuff inside breaks through the wall of the disk, thus reducing the thickness of the disc, which, in turn, causes nerve root irritation and pain.

Tom, just twisting to get from the ladder to get on the roof can cause a herniation.  Climbing up a six foot ladder to watch and maybe even supervise might be fine, but stay off the roof given your condition.

I have personal experience with falls of a short distance and they can be life threatening.  I fell from a scaffold when a plank broke that was not more than 7' high and it nearly killed me.  The medical bills were over $500K and 12 years later, I still deal with the consequences.

I have the Pod very level and stable and would probably even hook it to the truck to give it even more front to rear stability.

I fell off the second step on a ladder, maybe 2 ft, but on my side onto concrete. Broke my left hip and elbow. No surgery but 6 weeks in a wheelchair allowed to put no weight on either my left leg or arm. Basically that made me pretty close to helpless, you can't get far in a wheelchair without both arms, I just went around in counterclockwise circles. Lesson learned, you only need to fall a foot or two to break yourself.

I have a grandson who now gets the "opportunity" to crawl around and learn under my "supervision" while I stay in a safe place and observe. So I like your idea of "training" the 14 year old. Consider combining that with some modern tech. I've found that if we both use our iphones on facetime I can look at what he's doing in real time without being in his face.  Works out well for both of us, my grandson gets less direct interference from grandpa and I get to sit comfortably in the shade in a lounge chair and sip an adult beverage  Big smile

Thanks, Yes I know the difference between the actual disc and the vertebrae. I jus used that term as most people at least in this part of the country refer to the disc and vertebra as the same thing.   It was the vertebra that slipped. I basically have no disc per the Dr. He said that the one that slipped was the only one that had a remotely normal disc left. the rest are bone on bone.

The good news was, as everyone who has this type surgery are concerned with loss of range of motion. He said I was already so arthritics that I wouldn't really notice that much.

He was right. As the muscles stretch to conform to the new correct positioning of the neck I see very little difference in my range of motion.

Worse thing about the whole ordeal is I had a severe reaction to all the nerves firing again along with the extended anesthesia, pain meds etc my brain went into overload and was having severe panic attacks thinking I couldn't breath even though I knew I was fine I could not convinced my brain that I was fine. I was also having hallucinations.   It took several days to get all the drugs out of the system ... Not Fun at all...

Yes I taught him to change a fan belt on his sisters car, cut the grass, trim and other things.. Also teaching him how to cook his own meals , do his laundry , and clean a house. And to do things for others without being told or asked.    Trying to make him understand that all those are not necessarily women's work.

That being a man is all about how you treat others, Not what you do. Its about being able and willing to take care of yourself and others.

Tom, I couldn't agree more with what you are teaching your step-son.  He is very fortunate to have someone like you as his mentor.

Thank you all for your well wishes and kind words. Hope to get that boy on the roof next week, hoping to do a short weekend in Mississippi in the next 2-3 weeks.
