Welcome! Are you asking for a "just in case" scenario or do you have an actual problem?

Since I don't have one, I am guessing that the 196 has the same Schwintek slide-out mechanism that our 179 has. That being the case, the answer is, you don't. Manual operation is an emergency action when all else fails. It involves loosening the motors on either side of the slide out on the top track and lifting them up to disengage them. Then the slide is pushed in manually and blocked so it can't slide out since there is nothing holding it in place with the motors disengaged. Then it is a trip to your dealer or other service department to have the cause of the failure diagnosed and repaired.

If it is a lack of battery power, just hooking up the tow vehicle can provide enough electricity to operate the slide-out. Even that should not be needed unless your converter failed and the battery/batteries is/are dead. However, even if the battery/batteries has/have gone bad, the converter (if plugged in) should provide sufficient power to operate the slide-out. Now, there may be an instance where you would need to find the control box and see if there is a code if it isn't working right. We purchased our 179 in December, 2015. In the time we have owned it, we have not had any issues with the slide-out.

I would recommend reading the owner's manual. One thing you need to do to keep the motors in sync is to not stop the slide-out partway in or out except in an emergency where it is absolutely necessary (such as something stuck in a place that would damage the slide-out if not stopped). That could lead to them getting out of sync. The manual does explain how to get them back in sync if that happens. Best practice is to hold the switch until the motors shut themselves off.

No its just something i need to put in my knowledge bank for emergency. I watched a video of disengaging the motor from outside on the slide thru an access point. I do not have this outside access as the video showed, therefore i think u have to unplug both plugs from the controller but i dont know how to access the controller. If someone who owns a 196 can tell me how to get to the control box, i believe after i unplug the two plugs it will allow me to manually push the slide in. I dont intend to manually move the slide until or if i had to in an emergency but like to know how to get to the controller.

There's also a procedure where u can reset the controller by doing a series of push button manipulations on the control box itsef to fix a problem if the distance on the sides of the slide gets to be longer on one side from the other. I would still need access to the control box to do this also. So the key is to have someone advise me on location of the controller and i could figure it out. I dont have an owners manual.

Don't expect an owner's manual from Forest River to cover things like the control box location. It is likely somewhere in the slide. On the 179, it is under the refrigerator, covered by a panel that moves with the slide-out. The panel covers wiring that also has to move with the slide-out. The link I sent has pictures of the control box. From that, you could look and find it. You should also look on the inside, bending the rubber seal back and out of the way. You won't find a special port for motor access. These motors are not that big.

I found the manual online which is probably where they intend for u to get it and thats why i dont have one. Its pretty limited on information. It just says to locate the controller. It does not give the location.

I'll have to leave it for someone else who has a 196 to help you find the location. However, since you know what it looks like, you can look and find it yourself. Forest River does not have a schematic showing the locations of various items, to include the controller.

Curious StephenH...if both motors work together to slide in. And out...what does stopping them half way do? I use have slid it in out to access the bath and refer while on the road...now you say no good don’t do it only all or nothing?

Buffalo Hunter, I think its just less off a chance to have the tracks get out of sync if u move them either all the way out or all the way in. It may never happen but why take the chance. Just like me wanting to know how to move the slide back in just in case although it may never happen.

+1. It isn't like it would happen every time, but there is the possibility. That is less likely to happen if the slide is moved all the way out or in in one motion, letting the motors stop by themselves at the end of travel. See the Lippert Owners and service manuals from the link I posted above.
