I was driveway camping at a friends house this weekend. I noticed when I turned on the bathroom sink I saw a little pink, before it ran clear. I had the camper dewinterized at the dealer while he was doing some maintenance. I am thinking of sanitizing the fwt to make sure everything is set to go. I sometimes have trust issues. Is it ok to run a cup of bleach into the tank then run thru the lines even thru the water heater? I know nomally the water heater doesn't have water in it when dewinterizing. Since it's already running, do I need to empty, and bypass it? Or will it be just fine.  Thanks.

I know people who have run the bleach through the HWT, I haven't.  Am not sure what it would do to your anode rod.  If I had your situation I would bypass the HWT and turn the 2 or 3 valves to bypass, in my 177 it takes about a minute as I cut an access hole (5" x 7") directly above the valves.  Simply lift my 8" mattress, turn valves and ready to go with the bleach.  We use 1/2 cup in 10 gallons in our FWT and let sit for 8 hours or overnight.  Flush out through all outlets a few times for a couple minutes and drain out the rest.  I really dislike the aftertaste that the bleach leaves; yes we use ours for drinking water, so the next day we put in 1 qt. white vinegar and 1 pt. lemon juice and let that sit overnight.  Next day run through all outlets just as done for the bleach and drain the balance.  After that I will fill with fresh water from our well and let sit for a short time (1/2 hour) run through faucets as before and drain.  Finally - ready to go podding!  Been doing it this way for the last 5 years.  Guess we were lucky as the tank was never sanitized from the time we picked it up March 2011 until our ERU in Traverse City back in 2016 when Furpod told me 'SANITIZE or DIE."  Guess it helps that we are from northern Michigan or probably would have had a good amount of mold or moss growing inside.

Bleach does not hurt the anode rod. Go ahead and sanitize it also. I follow the bleach with baking soda dissolved in water. That works well for us.

Or just don't drink the water from your tank, bring bottled water for cooking, drinking, and tooth brushing Its not a big deal, I just sit one of those plastic 2.5 gallon dispensers on the counter when I set up camp. I always do that anyway regardless of the status of my tank. How do you know that the source you filled the tank with while camping was safe?

I fill our tank at home which I know is safe. If I need to fill on the road, I make sure I use a safe supply, never from one marked non-potable. I also use a Camco TastePure filter and use Camco TastePure Drinking Water Freshener when I fill the tank. I'm sure my FWT's water is safe to drink, probably just as much as a refillable drinking water container which also needs to be sanitized to be safe. The only time we carried water separately was when we were traveling in the winter and the water system was winterized. Then it was not a matter of safety, but necessity.

I don't use refillable containers, just buy the 2.5 gallon ones at the grocery store, then recycle them. Two of them last a couple of weeks and add 17% to the limited water supply in the rPod. I've done enough international travel that using bottled water for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth is second nature to me. I've never gotten sick in all those years doing it that way. Simple, easy, inexpensive, no fuss, and no worries. Everyone has their personal preferences, I just thought I'd share mine. There is no right or wrong answer as long as you stay healthy.

I only use bottled water to drink, but we rinse the occasional dish, shower, and brush the fangs with fwt water. So I would rather just be sure. Thanks for all the replies.
