    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 at 6:16pm

I ended up on a 3 day trip into Oklahoma and on the way out of Texas on a north-south highway, I had a pretty fierce broadside wind, 40 mph or so...with passing trucks going the other way, and somewhere, out there, my spare tire cover apparently took flight and is probably in Missouri by now!

Check those spare tire covers! Your sway control thinga-ma-bob does NOTHING to prevent a case of the dreaded....

Nekkid Rubber!

LOL

Hmmm, nekkid tire, neet so goot!

Almost had that happen once.  Cured that by putting the bottom of the tire cover between the tire and the bar that holds the tire.  Snug it tight with the bolt that holds the tire.  No problems in the last 9.5 years even though we have been through some pretty significant wind events.

Curious as to what the antenna is for going up from your nekkid tire?

Ham radio...that's a small dual bander (VHF-UHF) antenna on a push-up painters pole....I had a local shop weld on an open piece of pipe along the vertical part of the spare tire mount, and the painters pole slips down into that, and secured with a bolt.

The same idea could be used for any kind of small antenna, flagpole, drone beacon, deep sea fishing pole, windsock, kite anchor, outdoor lighting, religious or political symbols, whatever a person might need....

When we lived in Hatteras I lost 3 tire covers to 3 hurricanes. Didn’t seem to matter how tight I had em on there. After that I just took em off before the storms and put them back after. Duh.

I ended up wrapping the tire with a plastic trash bag....and securing it with tape and a cargo strap....Since the tire and the lugnuts were so visible and vulnerable, I figured a 50 cent trashbag might keep all the burglars and tweakers and ner-do-wells at bay...not to mention all the forces of nature and physics...

AND IT WORKED! After 3 days and a few hundred miles, I still have the tire on the trailer, wrapped with a trashbag! Looks classy too!

That must be a 'heavy duty' trash bag to hold up to all that wind without fraying.Shocked  Maybe you should get a patent on that.  People today will buy just about anything that looks "classy."

Hi from another ham. KO4GOG

I have not had the cover fly off. I am on my second one. The elastic on the first one was wearing out, so I got a new one. I still have the old one and have used it to cover an additional spare that was unmounted to keep it clean while it was in my shed.
