Does anyone have any thoughts on purchasing the extended warranty before your first year warranty expires? Wondering if it is worth the cost and if anyone has purchased it and had to use it?

One of the few products I say yes to the extended warranty! And yes I had to use it!

We purchased our 177 back in January 2011, opted for no warranty and were not disappointed with the decision.  It has been my habit from day one - no warranty or extended protection program.  This has included everything from auto, appliances, cell phones, computers, anything electronic, snow thrower, lawn mower, rototillers, furnaces, air conditioners, everything for over 40 years - this has been followed.  Never been disappointed with that decision.  Take that money that you save from the warranty and invest it, you will be way ahead in the end.

Essentially all extended warranties are a form of insurance or risk transfer.  The person who takes the risk needs to make a profit, thus, in the grand scheme of things, the cost of that insurance includes the cost of fixing the insured losses, administration of the claims system, marketing the insurance, and profit for the person/company taking on the risk.  All of this costs more than simply fixing something yourself.  The tradeoff is gambling that you'll be the one who needs the repairs rather than the person who pays and pays, but never collects.

Personally, I rarely buy any form of extended warranty, because I figure it's cheaper to self insure in the long run.  There are some instances where I have opted to buy an extended warranty, but it did not include our travel trailer.  Most of the stuff that breaks on the travel trailer I can fix myself and the cost of the insurance far exceeds the risk for the cost of parts and the value of a retired geezer's labor.  On the other hand, I bought the Ford extended warranty for our F-150 because I'm not really able to fix serious stuff with it and the parts alone pose a very substantial risk that I don't want to take.  A computer board, for example, can cost as much as the total price for the warranty insurance.

For those who have the means to pay for extended warranty insurance and don't want to or can't fix their own travel trailers, purchasing such a policy may be a very good idea.  For those who lack the resources to pay and can fix it themselves, extended warranties may be a big waste of money.  It's all a matter of gambling with what can happen and what risk you can accept.
Never leave footprints behind.

I ask exactly what was covered in the one I was offered and it did not cover any of the structural components only the components that were covered by their own OEM warrantys. Save your money for other up grades ie: mattress, solar, etc.

I think LA has it right, on average you will always lose on any insurance because the insurer has to make a profit.

The exceptions are subsidized insurances like flood and some medical. So I also only carry insurance that is subsidized, legally required, or for risks that I don't have the resources to cover on my own.

Medical being the primary one, the horrendous costs for that can bankrupt an average person in just a few days. Trailers are dirt cheap and easy to fix in comparison to the human body.
