I have fought with mobile internet access for years and come up with a neat way to surf the web.  I have had a work Iphone 3gs for about 2 years with unlimited data plan on it.  Back in July 2010 it began legal to "Jailbreak" your Iphone.  (Jailbreak means to allow your iphone to run other software Apple has not approved in the App Store).  One of the applications out there is MyWi which allows you to tether the phone to a computer and use wireless or USB to surf the net.  Works well when you have a signal.  Cost of the application was about $20.00 one time and then NO added monthly fee as I already have the unlimited Data PLan.  Only problem with it is that I can not take the newest apple update to the phone as Apple will break the jailbreak.
 
Anyone else come up with other ways for mobile internet?

Currently, I just tether my netbook to my BlackBerry 9700 using bluetooth.  No jailbreaking or special software required.  I have a 6GB data plan which includes tethering for $30/mo.  Its rare that I exceed 3GB in a month, even though I tether it almost daily.  Using it couldn't be easier: I just open my netbook and it resumes (I never power off) and it finds and connects to my BlackBerry automatically.

Before I got my BlackBerry and bodacious data plan, I had a Novatel u720 internet stick (I bought it 4 years ago) and then a Novatel u727 internet stick (bought it 2 years ago).  I could plug either directly into my laptop/netbook or into my CradlePoint CTR-350 travel router if I wanted to share my internet connection.  When travelling with our r-pod, I'd plug in the modem+router (it ran off of 12v) before we pulled out of the storage lot and leave it on 'till we got home; no matter where we travelled, we had our own hotspot.

Be prepared, the AT&T unlimited plans are being phased out.  I had an unlimited plan for 3 years ($60/mo for full tethering) then suddenly 2 months ago they notifed me that I now have a 5 GB plan.  Same price of course.  Ironically my wife has been on the $30/mo unlimited plan for 2 years and hers is still unlimited.  For now.  It will soon NOT be unlimited I was told.

I have a Verizon USB760 dongle that has a pay-as-you-go plan.  You're not locked into any type of plan using this and they have a few different selections to choose from.

Alot of different ways to connect.  From what our corporate rep from AT&T told us the unlimited data plans would stay till we switched phones.  At that time I will be looking for something easy to connect to.

When I do not have internet access, I now use my HTC Evo and use the HotSpot feature.  I just call Sprint to activate it on the phone.  When I am done for the weekend, I call them back and deactivate it.  This way, I only pay a $1 a day.

When on a 4G network, it is faster then most land lines and that was with 3 laptops and 3 mobile devices connected to it.

AT&T told me the rule was either when you switch your phone or 2 years after some arbitrary point they decide.  In my case I've had my phone over 3 years so they decided it was time.

jon - interesting that they let you turn that feature on and off, nice way to save some money.
