Hello fellow podders,
My wife and I bought our 180 in October of 2019. The dealer messed up and sold the 2019 we had a deposit on so they sold us the 2020 for the same price. Score one for us. We've been to many different states and lots of state parks: mostly Texas but also LA, MS, AL, KY, OK, AR, NM; so only 42 to go. Will have some logistics to work on to get to Hawaii🤔. We've accumulated much: kayak, smokeless pit, zero gravity chairs, gas fire pit and Blackstone grill for all the burn ban nights, not to mention all the accessories to accompany all the new toys. We've also experienced a lot: tire blowout, chiggers, tow vehicle issues on the road, maintenance and a few upgrades. I am a major DIY'er and have repaired, replaced, upgraded, and maintained all but one problem (a short in the wiring system) in our 3+ years of traveling. My wife has been a member through FB, not sure if it's the same, and has asked questions for me in the past and my gratitude to anyone kind enough to answer. I look forward to sharing with y'all our experiences, both good and bad, our triumphs and our failures. And also look forward to knowing all of y'all and hearing about your experiences as well. I'm Frank my wife is Jill. My best friend gave me the nickname Slickdog decades ago for McGeyvering thru problems on the job site. Though, I'll admit not always working out.....the first time😎. Welcome to this forum Frank and Jill. Enjoy your 24/7 owners manual right here. Many times I have been given insight and direction to issues encountered over the years. There are a lot of members here who have a lot of good information and experience who are ready to help when you have a question, problem or issue. We have been blessed never having tire issues, even with the so called 'china bombs' that came with our 177 when it was picked it up in March 2011, those were Tire Kings, a "C" rated tire. After that we went with Hartlands, another "C" tire and then 2 years ago upgraded to a "D" rated Carlisle Radial Trail - huge difference in handling and 'bounce' when going over rough roads and windy conditions. Experiences, both good and bad, are part of the camping trip. Last fall, on our 30 day trip out West we encountered a breakdown on our way to the North Rim, Grand Canyon. The truck, suddenly dropped speed from 45 to 15 mph, and was locked down into 2nd gear (10 speed transmission). Well, it just so happened we were 1 mile away from a private campground and it just so happened to have 2 spots left in Jacob Lake, about 40 miles north of the North Rim. It just so happened that we were placed next to a couple that were also having issues with their "C" rated motorhome. It just so happened they were waiting for a mechanic that was coming 40+ miles from a different state, Utah, to look into their problems. It just so happened after he got the neighbors motor home repaired he had time for us and found we had gotten a rock that punctured the top of our oil filter, and we had lost about 2.5 quarts of oil, hence the transmission lock down. He was amazed, saying he never saw a rock puncture the top of the filter due to its location on the engine; yes, he had many times seen the bottom of the filter punctured due to rocks/construction debris but never the top. Two days later he came back and got us fixed up and back on the road. My wife and I were certain these were not "it just so happened" circumstances but were fore ordained by our sovereign Creator. It didn't fit in with our plan, but it did with His. How we react to circumstances will determine what kind of individuals we are and become. Our blowout occurred on busy IH35 near Kyle TX. Luckily we we on the outside lane and was able to shoulder pretty quick. Ironically the the tire sensor monitor sounded after we stopped. I asked my wife to walk back to locate the fender. When she returned she said it was mangled and across the highway against the median. Only God kept that from hitting another vehicle. It could have been way worse for a whole lot of other people. Changed tires. Discount Tire was nearby, we purchased 3 new ones and was back in the road in less than an hour. It took months to get shipped the new fender and light kit and another 2 months before I could get it installed. Look forward to knowing everybody, And if the name is not taken we dub our 180 AlamoPod |
