Does anyone have any thoughts on coupler locks or other theft preventives? I realize these are more deterrents for casual theft--a serious thief will chain it up and drive off anyway. There are coupler locks, hitch pin locks, wheel clamps, and maybe something else besides.

I'm leaning towards the Diversi-Tech Universal or the Steal Shield. I know wheel clamps are a good addition but I can imagine pulling out and hearing bad noises. 

Or, is this money spent for false security? I've switched out the 1A plates that seem to attract vandalism in other Idaho counties.

I've often wondered the same thing.  I've got a basic coupler lock that I always use.  As you say, a dedicated thief will just chain up the trailer and drive away, but I'm hoping that a thief of opportunity will see my bright yellow lock and move on to the next trailer.

What are "1A plates"?
 
I hate to admit I don't use anything other than the standard latch lock.  I have thought many times of adding heavy chain through the spokes of a wheel, padlocked over the axle.  My reasoning is while I know they can just drive up and wrap chains around the tongue to drive it off (cutting off the lock a few miles away on a back road), the second they try the wheel will lock up as it skids down the road.  Hopefully leading them to just drop it on the ground and drive off.

Sorry for being obscure. Some states put the county of issue on the plate. In Idaho the code is the first letter of the county plus the order. Thus Ada is 1A, Adams is 2A, Butte is 10B. New Mexico used to use a sticker with the county name. Vehicles from the largest city can be singled out for vandalism--Boise/Meridian/Eagle are Ada County, Albuquerque is Bernalillo County. It's easy to be paranoid about this but it does happen. It's also easy to see who the out of town drivers are. Undoubtedly more information than you wanted... --Jim

I got the 1A thing immediately - we are 2C, and now have personalized plates for our Pod for the same reason. It still doesn't help when you go to other states, though.Ouch
