We have a 2.5 week vacation second and third week of September and I was thinking of surprising the better half to a trip to Europe... without the 'pod and pups! ...  Thought I'd throw out some questions to fellow travelers and adventurers about some favourite areas that you've visited in the last couple of years.  We like rough/rocky beaches - coastlines,  enjoy a good glass of wine, not the biggest history buffs but do enjoy architecture,  hiking, biking, not a fan of big crowds or cities, or shopping!  Any suggestions would be helpful as I have absolutely no idea where to start.  Thanks again,

W

Heading out to the storage unit shortly to check the 'pod ... Excited!

If you want to stay away from crowds, look at Portugal or Spain.

WinkIf you're Scandanavian...and want to explore Denmark, Sweden, and/or Norway...expect the sticker shock of your life!  I spent a month traveling there last September.  Considered the 'off-season'...workers and kids are back in school. Gas/diesel was up to $10US/gallon equivalent, a good cheap hotel (not hostel) room was $100-$300US/night.  Food was equally expensive.  Liquor was through the roof in price. On the fjord coasts, you drive for one hour and then have to pay a ferry toll, over and over again. Oslo, Norway was declared the most expensive city in the world for 2011!
However, Sweden was the RV capital of Europe.  We passed more RV rental dealers in the first hour than days traveling elsewhere.  Like Alaska...probable cheapest way to be a tourist.

The pros like Samantha Brown and Rick Steve's seem to like the Adriatic coast - ex-Yugoslavia-  thus Croatia etc for the rocky coast and inexpensive touring.  Scotland has lots of rocky coasts, good malt whiskeys, lots of hiking trails, and they speak English!
Have a great time where ever you go!
