we will be going into season 4 this coming summer. when I winterize I always pull and inspect the anode. this last fall I had about 50 % metal left on it. I will probably replace it in the fall 2014.

Wow, the "used" anode must have had some outside help like chemicals found in city water or something else like it.  We have had our 177 for three years now, mainly use simple well water and by the looks of it, should last at least a couple more years.

I'd buy another to hold on to, as cheap as they are.  Check your existing one mid-summer, and again when you winterize next fall, replacing at that point no matter what.

Doug ours is going on 3yr now and is in between those two anodes. Just wondering if I should replace it this spring when the pod comes out of hibernation?

Just wondering how do you know when it needs to be replaced? We purchased the pod in Sept '13 and have only had it out twice. I realize that our anode is fine, but what does it look like when it's finished?
Thanks!!
