WinkWe are doing a 7500 mile trip this summer and would like some information on the wheel bearings. We have a R171. The dealer told me to repack every 2000 miles. What are the bearing numbers so I have a spare pair. Can I pack myself or do I need to use a dealer? I need some tips on packing. Thanks for any suggestions.

I've used these in the past on autos. But you need a grease gun as well .

This one has good reviews, but I have never used it.

Not sure what the trailer wheel bearings look like. I think some of them have "no maintenance" bearings, like cars. It depends on the maker of the axle/hubs.

It is usually recommended to service the wheel bearings every 12mo./12,000 miles. If it has never been done, it would not hurt to have them serviced. The factory(s) do not always do the best job of it. I would want to know that they are in good shape before leaving on a long trip.

Here is something to look at:

It is not a hard job but, it is a messy job. You can buy the repacking tool or, as I do, put a dollup of grease in your hand and manually repack the bearings. When I do mine, I always buy some spray brake cleaner and clean the pads, etc., also. You can get everything you need at a good auto parts store.

If you do a search (upper right) on "bearings", you'll get several pages of hits.

If you are not confident that you can do it, most any mechanic could. Shop around.

Ditto, my dealer told me the same 12 month or 12,000 miles.

Hey, that's better than my dealer. He said every 2000 miles.

Just had my local mechanic do mine 2 weeks ago.  I think it was about $150 for 2 axles, including new seals.

If you just do weekend trips every summer you can go a few years between service.  Definitely do it before a big trip, along with a once-over on the TV.  You'll probably also need an oil change for the TV mid-way.
