First weekend out with our 180, which we had picked up 2 days before, and we are total newbs at camping of any kind.

We would get a few seconds of hot water, then it would start cooling down. Electric switch was on, and had water through the hot water faucet before turning it on. I suspected it had something to do with the bypass, but didn't want to tear into it during our stay.

Took the bed apart tonight, and all 3 valves were open (parallel with the water lines). I'm assuming the vertical line is the bypass, and that the valve should be perpendicular to be closed for normal use? I had specifically asked our walk-through tech if he had closed the bypass, and he said he had. Should have checked for myself.

I'm hoping the fact that all 3 valves were open kept the element from burning out. Any thoughts on that?

With the outside cover off, should I be able to feel some warmth back there with my hand, if it's working?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

We have many new owners start out with the mixing issue and none that I recall have reported a burned out element after. So I think you're OK.

Once the center valve is closed, you will be fine. With all 3 valves open you can be sure the WH is full and your element is fine.
