Hi Annie, toilet chemicals are recommended.

Yes.. I use Lysol spray in the bowl and on the seat between "uses".
Also use a black tank (and gray tank) treatment to stop the smell. Add the treatment AFTER each time you dump the tanks, and add a couple gallons of water through the bowl. This will keep the smell away until the next use. If you use the camper facilities infrequently (every month or more between trips) you should add before the trip as well.

You can buy the little pellet looking packets at Wal Mart, RV places, or hardware stores in the RV section. I drop one (they dissolve) down the toilet black water tank, and then cut one open and dump the powder down the kitchen sink into the grey water tank after each trailer dump out. No problem, no smells.

Biological agents are best. Some of the chemicals have things like formaldehyde, which can kill the bacteria in a septic system. Biological agents are recommended as they do not harm the septic systems in places where they are the only option for dumping. Ones like TankTech's Rx or (what I use) Unique RV Digest-It work well. These work to break down solids and help to keep sensors working. They don't just mask the odors with chemicals.
