New Podders here and we are starting to plan a trip to Western SD from Iowa - Black Hills & Badlands in July.   Any suggestions on great campgrounds and must see or do adventures.   Thanks in advance.

6 or so miles south of Deadwood we stayed at a campground that had a little creek running through it. I think there are actually 2 campgrounds on the west side and one on the east.

I believe the name is happy valley now. It has changed hands I believe.  Awesome sunset views to the west. Enough tree's for shade.  That creek ran within 10 feet of our tent on 2 sides. Just a nice low murmuring all night. We spent a week there and wished we never had to leave.

Deadwood nice and close for activities, shopping, etc.

Closest I've seen to heaven.

Take a look at Custer State Park.  I think it is a much a destonation park as Yellowstone or Rocky Mountain.  It is a huge park with campgrounds at a number of different elevations and in several ecozones.  Wildlife abounds.  I think it is a must if in SD.

Is there a place near Mount Rushmore that would be good for a stop on our way home? That is one place we would like to visit.

Be aware of the Sturgis motorcycle rally that is in that area from August 3rd to the 12th this year. Everyone tells me if you can find camping anywhere near Sturgis its an eye opener to say the least.

We'll be there long before the motorcycle rally.

We have reservations at the Cedar Pass campground in Badlands National Park in August and I never thought about the Sturgis rally. We overlap the rally by a few days. Does anyone know if this campground is far enough out of the "sphere of influence" of the rally? It looks to be far enough, but I don't know if it is.

I have lots of experience at the Sturgis Rally.

You will see (and hear) a lot of motorcycles, but mainly on day trips, and possibly some that are tent camping in the Badlands, but 'rally central' is closer to Sturgis, Deadwood, Custer areas.

Greetings:
I have visited the Black Hills many times and always stay in the Custer Area.  I would suggest using highway 79 and 36 to enter the Hills, park your RV and take day trips to see the sites.  Be sure and allow  a day to see the Devils Tower in Wyoming.  You don't want to tow an RV on many of the roads in the Hills.  Custer has many nice campgrounds and has easy access to all the sites.  It has many restaurants  and is a nice town.  DO NOT visit around the time of the rally.  They jack up prices of everything.  Safe travels and enjoy one of my favorite places to visit.
