In the (first time for me) process of winterizing this weekend and decided to pull the anode rod. Anyone know offhand the socket size of the nut head? I assume it’s SAE.

Also, for you intrepid modders who’ve put screws in the interior walls, what’s the maximum size screw (depth or length) I can use that will give me the most bite yet keep me safely away from puncturing the outer skin?  Thanks in advance.

1-1/16 inch. 27mm should work also if you're a metric guy.

The wall cavity is 1 inch but its foam filled and the wall material is thin so anything where the shank penetrates more than 1/4 inch is probably going to have the same pullout strength. For more strength you can try to hit the aluminum box tubing in the walls, depending on what you're trying to do.

Here's a great video of what's going on in the walls.

Be sure you relieve the pressure in the tank before you pull the anode rod.  Even if it has been some time since you had the pump on.  I know from experience that the pressure can blow both the rod and the 1/2" socket set a good 10 feet.

Are those dimensions the total thickness or just the foam?

John,

I also relieve pressure to tank, but also uncap low point drains.

+1 on this.  Mine sat for a month so I thought how could there be any pressure in the tank.  It happened to be a cool day and I got wet and colder.

Did relieve pressure via WH pressure relief valve, so no projectile incident.  I did find it interesting when removing the anode rod and rinsing WH interior to find so much crud in a one-year old camper with barely 2 seasons of use.  Plus, the camper is usually filled 2/3 full before leaving on trips with water that's filtered and softened.

I did get a nice spray bath of anti-freeze when unscrewing the two lower drain caps to drain.  Not sure where I went wrong but I knew I skewed a step when I used almost 2 gallons of fluid when others talk about using barely a half-quart.  Well, I guess better to use too much than not enough.

The amount of crud in HW tank is highly dependable on the water you are using. Anode is working.

Not sure how you got AF out of low point drains - they should have been opened and drained before AF was added.

Not sure either as I did open and drain them before drawing in the AF step.  Wasn't much, less than an once.

We bought a late 2016 camper supposedly light use.  I unscrewed the anode rod, and there was no rod, just the bolt nut.  Not a lot of junk coming out, but no rod.  I was surprised by that. They were from southern Nevada - maybe they used a lot of softened water.

Could also mean the water used was acidic or base to a greater than "normal" amount.

Maybe they pawned the zinc in Las Vegas.  Hopefully, this condition was not long standing.  You may want to keep an eye on your tank for pinhole leaks.  We don't want any unexpected floods cascading down from VC to Dayton.

We try to stick with nice Sierra snow runoff water when we fill our tank.  We're starting the third year with the anode I installed when we got the trailer and it still looks like new.  I just took it out when I replaced the heating element that had been destroyed likely long ago.  It looked like what I would have expected for our anode.

As I recall they are porcelain lined steel, we use to make smokers out of porcelain lined water heaters.
