Ok, so I'm getting ready for a long adventure, and trying to figure out how to carry canoe and/or kayaks for me and my wife. I have a 14ft canoe and a sit-in kayak, she has a sit-on-top kayak as well as an inflatable. I will have a softopper (www.softopper.com) on the truck, and the only rack I can find that will fit with that is from US Rack Co, and I don't particularly like it because I can't fold my topper down with it installed. Hi Jholler, As a kayaker (who used to drive the sweetest little BMW convertible) I looked at these a lot before giving up and buying a vehicle that can do stuff. inflatables don't track well in any kind wind or current. Their website was created by their salespeople. Remember, is he in sales? Is his mouth moving? Then... My experience is, anybody who tells you a boat can't sink is just not telling you the truth. Even ones with lots of floatation (which these don't have) will swamp and might as well sink for all the good they do you. Be careful! I have a Hobie Adventure Island (great boat) and carry it on the roof of my SUV. One of the benefits of an SUV over a pickup. Haven't tried to carry it while towing yet though. I understand salespeople, my Father was one lol. I also understand small boats, I was a Marine infantryman many years and pounds ago. Believe me, it'll be "stress tested" before it's depended upon. Second that. I've had one and I'm going to buy another. I'm not sure about their lowest cost models but if you can spend $500 to $600 or more you'll get a really good boat. And in the canoe/kayak world, I always thought there was a big distinction between capsizing and sinking. (I think the Amazon reviewer talked about tipping his boat....) It's not very hard to tip over just about any canoe or kayak, and for me anyway, that used to be part of the fun and adventure. You just catch your stuff before it floats too far away, right the boat and get back in, probably a lot cooler than you were before. Sinking, to me, means your boat is at the bottom of the lake and a salvage operation. if possible, might be more trouble than it's worth. I saw a foldable boat at REI yesterday. I don't know what brand. I was hoping they still carried Advanced Elements boats, but apparently not. REI has a 20% off one item sale for members right now, which would have made them pretty competitive for just about any kayak. Anyway, I wasn't very impressed with the foldable boat they had. Maybe for lakes and slow flat water, if that's all you're interested in. Any kayak will do that though. I want one that can offer more excitement. TT ------------- 2010 176 FJ Cruiser |

Thanks to both of you for posting this site, I'm very intrigued. And this in spite of having a wonderful kayaks that we love, but I can definitely see a couple of these for easier logistics in some of our settings and trips. The orus are awesome, and those modular ones are pretty cool too. I don't do whitewater, just flatwater recreational stuff, so I'm taking a chance the $350 folders will work for me. I carry a 10 1/2 foot Porta-Bote with a 2 1/2 HP Suzuki 4 stroke motor on my 180 R-Pod. I would hardly believe you could sink this one. They sell everything you need to mount it on your rig.Look up the info. info@porta-bote.com. I sure love mine, will be fishing all summer wherever I roam.
