On the side of our 171 bench seat we have a very thin one piece plywood board with a plasticy covering that is meant to keep the seat and back cushions from sliding out of position to the side. It has now been broken by people (me) getting in and out of the seat to sit down. I'd like for the replacement material to be flexible if possible so that it wouldn't break down again. It needs to be replaced but I'm not sure what the best replacement materials/methods are.

Any ideas/suggestions are welcome.

A really good fix for this is to remove these pieces entirely and put velcro on the cushions.

Thanks.

Under the cushions there is a thin board that covers the storage space of the bench. I have put a piano hinge on it but still have trouble raising it with one hand while holding the two cushions out of the way. Your velcro suggestion sounds like a good way to keep the back cushion out of my way. I'll try it, and of course the velcro is a lot easier than fashioning some sort of replacement side barrier.

I also installed a couple of pistons on both side of the access panels.  Holds it up while I am rummaging around!!

I use a "prop rod" to hold up the plywood decking under our bed.  It is the same as needed to hold up the bench top as well.

I made a 1x1 piece of wood that is the right length to hold the bed bottom/bench up.  It has a notch in the bottom to fit the bed frame/bench and the top has a short piece  of dowel inserted at a right angle.   The top fits into a hole drilled into the plywood top of the bed or bench. The top of the 1x1 is rounded smooth so as to not snag the mattress.

I also used 1x2 hinges for the plywood.  I covered the hinges with pieces of nylon webbing so they don't snag the mattress.

Each pod will need a different length depending on the height and angle needed.
