Subject: Replacing the dinette table
Date Posted: 08 Mar 2020 at 8:32am
I'd like to hear from those who have replaced their dinette table with something else.

We don't use nor intend to use the dinette in our 177 as a bed.  The table is awkward to sit around with the legs and mechanism.

Any suggestions?

Keep in mind I'm asking about the 177 or equivalent folding dinette table and area.

thanks.

Here's a possibility you may like.  We installed a pedestal for our 172 and it made a huge difference in getting in and out of the dinette.  In fact, as we also almost never used the dinette for a bed,  we got a Lifetime plastics child's height card table from Costco and mounted it on the pedestal that made it much easier to fit around the table.  It weighed less than half of the OEM table and worked very well for 2 and was adequate for 3.  I saved the old table top to bring along in the event we needed the bed space for a grandkid.

We replaced the table in our 179. I used 3/4" birch plywood with 3 coats of tabletop varnish from woodworker's supply. The metal post legs are totally removable from the metal bases and ride on the bed for travel. the table top rides upside down strapped on the seat while moving.  the metal bases are screwed into a piece of 3/4" plywood that is on the floor and cut to fit tightly between the 2 footstools and couch. The table is very solid, but easy to disassemble for travel. The posts and bases are widely available on the internet.

you can cut the top to whatever dimension you want.  We started with it large and kept cutting it down until we finally decided on 24"x39"
I hope this helps

I went to a boat store and bought two pedestal seat sockets and the removable pedestal.  mount to the underside of a plywood top and  and a smaller plywood bottom. the top, bottom and pedestal come apart and ride on the bed with the lawn chairs. Just have to learn not to lean on the table when getting up.  that was 5 years ago.  The old table is in the barn and you can have it if you want one.

Thanks all.  Good ideas.

I put one of these in my truck camper and like it a lot.  Might give that a thought too if I can figure out how to mount it.....maybe reinforce one side of the bench wall and mount it there.

We have purchased a 36" round table from "Zoro" which has eliminated the knee knocking and my wife and I are not going to need the extra sleeping space.  It works for us.

+1 on the table! That is one really nice piece of work. How does the sliding part lock in place for travel?

There is a lever on the front left corner, if the lever sticks out you can slide it, if in it wont move. Pic showes in fixed position.

Nice job, marwayne.  That's how my truck camper table works....slides back and forth.  Combined with the Lagun table mount, it sure works well.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.

I also dont need the bedspace there, so I replaced the heavy, clumsy POS OEM table legs with a pedestal.

I also used aluminum angle to attach the table to the forward wall, so it can't move or fall during transit.

The result is that the table is now very sturdy, stable, and easy to use.

We have a 2018 190.

I built a 5X5 center post and extended legs out from the bottom about 9" from each side..  It is always loose and can be moved at any time.  I also included the tie down rings on the underside of the table for travel.  This works very well and is very stable for use,  with no wobble.

Sorry, I don't have any pictures. I need to learn how to post them, as I have done a ton of rmodifications to the ole RPOD.

I totally rebuilt the cabinet over the sink to the full depth of the slide out and put a full size door on it.  Converted the closet to a pantry and did the "over the bed" shelf thing for our clothes and installed a towel cabinet in the bath over the toilet.  In fact, there isn't too much in there that was original!LOL

This camper is to versatile.  We are having a ball with it.

Wow @Marwayne the woodwork in yours looks like solid hardwood! The quality in these must have gone down a lot because the cabinets and wood in ours is all super thin panel or pressboard.

Marwayne... I’m curious to know how stable your table is with the single pedestal?  I’ve seen some use two pedestals to replace the contraption that FR uses but I see you only used one... I’m planning on stealing your design for the sliding table.  Any advice?

I don't know what kind of look you're going for but I wanted something more homey than a camper table.  I found one like this ($30 thrift store version) and it works beautifully. I lay it down for travel but the top comes off to easily use the whole thing outside if I want to. It snugs up out of the way when I don't need it and functions perfectly as a dining table when I do.

I'm finding that I am using my home-built table more than the dual pedestal mount for the stock table. It is easy to maneuver and lays down on the bed for travel. It is in my mods. This is the specific link:
http://www.rpod-owners.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=7712&PID=107374&title=our-escapod-mods#107374 - http://www.rpod-owners.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=7712&PID=107374&title=our-escapod-mods#107374

I did end up re-doing the table top though. The single board for each side meant that it was more subject to warping. I re-did it with narrower boards, reversing the grain and using a spline between each board. It is much more resistant to warping now.

Kup pod, if you look under the table in the back there is a support that I can flip up if we need the dinette for a bed
