Do I need tire covers for my 'pod? Why? My tires are right at 4 y.o., now.

Need? Maybe not. They do help a bit, but 4 year old tires are still 4 years old. Is that how long you have had them or is the date based on the DOT code on the sidewall of the tires? If the former, they may be even older than 4 years.

We only use them during winter storage.

It's based on the date code. Since the recommended life is 5 years, I don't understand the covers. Its hard to imagine 5 y.o. tires having much UV damage, so I wondered if there was another reason.
I ran a set of winter tires for my Miata a little over
8 years. They'd turned hard like plastic; easy fish-tails. Kinda learned my lesson. I plan to replace the trailer tires this fall.

Appearance is one reason one might want to use them. It does dress up things a bit. I have a set, but they are not on right now. I'd be more concerned with a tire sitting in one position for extended periods. I'm not sure what that does sitting on one spot for months at an end. Flatspotting is something that does happen.
