Anyone had this trick played on them? While we were camping recently at Pinnacles NP  (suitably self-isolating) some prankster must have opened up the black water valve and then closed it again so I wasn't aware of it.
Consequence was that when we came to dump and I opened the cap to fit the hose, about a gallon of smelly black water emptied onto the ground, entailing a very messy cleanup operation.

Any ideas how to foil this in future, apart from padlocking the valve shut? Or always have a bucket ready just in case....

Embarrassed dumpster.

You have the smart and cost effective solution John, keep a bucket ready.  Even in northern Michigan we have known of a couple instances where this has happened to others.  They have come to the same conclusion as you; place a bucket underneath before opening the cover.  Yes, another step that you rather not have to do but the alternative is even more of a hassle IMHO, padlocking or some other way to keep your valve handle from being opened by some vagrant.

Have you checked the vales for leaks?  I've replaced my Pod-180 3" valve due to leaks.  The seals on the valve get pounded by the grit that get kicked up by the tire and the valves should be lubed and periodically disassembled and clean and relube the seals

I agree.  I had a similar situation as OP, but where Pod was located there was no one to blame but the valve.

We had this happen but was due to a small piece of TP lodged in the seal of the valve, allowed slow leak.

One other thing to check though is the handle. I noticed that the handle on mine was a little loose on the threads. I put some Locktite on the threads to make sure it does not come off somewhere. That does not address a leak, but it is still related to being able to open and close the valve.

If someone is having a repeated problem with Vandals' and Visigoths' practical jokes of pulling out the handle on the tank valves, one possible solution would be to remove the handle and put it back on when you need to open the gate valve.  Maybe put a piece of tape over the threads to keep them clean.

I wonder if you could rig something that would supply a little squirt of blackwater in the direction of the pranksters when they first pulled the handle, and then shut off? You'd have to remember to disable the booby trap yourself though when you went to dump.....Evil Smile
