Have any of you in the Northeast enjoyed the free camping available on Maine Public Lands?

I recently spent a few days on the Machias River Corridor near Wesley Maine.  It was awesome.  There are about seven sites in the " airline campground" where I was and there are a couple of other similar campgrounds nearby.  There are no amenities (except for the spectacular view of the river). The free sites have picnic tables and fire rings. But here's the thing, the only bathroom is an outhouse and the sites (though far apart from each other) are pretty small. Just big enough for an Rpod actually. While I was there, most of the sites remained empty. I suspect that's because most people want a bathroom and most RVs with bathrooms are too big to fit.

I can't say enough about this place (in fact if you decide to run up there, let me know and I might meet you). You can stay there for up to 14 days. I just bought a Renogy suitcase. :)

Beautiful area! I have spent several weeks on Sysladobsis Lake at a log cabin camp. A short logging road ride from Grand Lake Stream. Some of the best bass and lake salmon fishing I have ever done.

Campgrounds look really interesting! Thanks!

Amazing amount of land to explore in the Maine North Woods! Just take care dragging your rPod through there. Slow and easy! Most the logging roads are graded nicely for the logging trucks, so what you're speed and most are better than the interstate (at speeds they say you can go).

I'm doing some route building between Maine and NH (my home state). I'm out again come Monday for a exploratory run out of Berlin (into Maine) and seeing how far north I get on dirt!!

New theme: Byways no Highways! Show me the dirt!

Nice! I have been very careful and going slow. I have also, so far, picked the campgrounds that are not far from main roads.I did make a wrong turn onto what I think was an ATV trail accidentally.  By the time I figured it out, I was mid-point. I didn't like that at all very bumpy.

Some of the best spots are up the roads.. Your being smart by picking which to or not to! We joked in the Atlantic Maritimes about wishing the road was dirt again.. those where better than some of the tarred we travel, LOL.

Our new means of camping/travel 'My Overlander'.

Lance makes some really nice campers for pickup trucks.  They're out of my budget, but really nice. http:// www.lancecamper.com/truck-campers/ -  https://www.lancecamper.com/truck-campers/

issue with Lance is height/weight and then cost.. Most all in-truck campers start just over 800lbs base weight. Full blown units can easily go over 1300lbs!! Ya, base weight..

My base weight is only 80lbs over stock. Mainly due to the bed coming off.

Anywho.. Maine's North Woods has a lot of opportunity for all of us. Just take it slow!

Safe Travels!

It's all a matter of one's camping style, comfort level requirements, and budget.  One person's castle is another's shack.  Some people can carry everything they want in a backpack, while others prefer a full mobile house complete with electronic entertainment systems parked in an RV park.  For those who find sleeping on the ground is too much for old bones, Olddawgsrule's alternative is certainly one viable way to get out into the boondocks.  There are lots to enjoy out there for all camping styles.

I was in Maine heading back into NH searching a passable route. I will in the near future work this deeper towards Maine and the lands between Umbagog and Richardson Lakes. It's one of those unique areas of Maine's wilderness that calls you to explore!

So much to explore and so little time to do so..

Safe travels!

P.S. I don't know why it looks like I'm driving so fast... I think I hit 15mph a couple times... LOL

Very good! Most of what I routed (most..) is traveler friendly if you go slow and know how to drive woods roads. Most the Maine North Woods is like this. What is going back to native, is what us Ovrlanders want. Maine North Woods has everything! Except a KOA (thank God)...LOL
