I've been having so much fun in my 2016 172 that my dinette cushions were looking really tired and dirty (plus there was that spoiler leak). I just recovered them in a really simple way and they look great. Since I use the dinette area more as a couch, at the same time I added a couple of inches of foam to make it more comfortable. I got upholstery fabric (6 yards for the 172 dinette) and some 2" foam at a discount store and cut the foam to the size of the cushions. I laid the fabric face down on the floor, put my cushions face down on the fabric, the foam on the cushions, and then the plywood boards from the dinette seats on top of the foam. I cut the fabric to allow plenty of edge for wrapping and then wrapped the whole mess (as tightly as I could) folding the corners neatly like wrapping a gift. I used a staple gun to secure it. Once I got all the stuff together it took just about 3 hours and cost less than $100 (yay Marden's). I'm so excited about how nice and fresh it looks. Plus I can recline on it reading for hours without my back aching. ------------- Julie |

Congratulations!  I sewed the cushions I made for our 179, but your idea of incorporating a plywood boards is a good idea to stiffen the cushions. It would not have worked for mine as well due to the length and need to flex them to move them though. How about some pictures?

Please let us know how it goes. I have sewed covers before (I have covered the back cushions and lots of pillow. but it was so much harder and they never look quite right unless you're pretty good and I'm not. Also, the long cushion is very long (172 has the u-shaped dinette with 2 smaller seat cushions and one big one). It was difficult to wedge into place but I have opened the under seat storage paneling so I never really have to move them. I'll try pictures but I've never has success with that on this forum. ------------- Julie |
