Will this battery box work and does anyone have any feedback on this one? Or others to suggest.

The one I installed five years ago on our 177 is a 2.31 cubic foot metal box from Harbor Freight. Inside height 11.5", inside from front to back 11", inside width 27.5" - 34.5", and weight 24.65 lbs. Works well for a pair of group size 24 12 volts, pretty sure it would handle two 6 volts as well. Have it mounted directly behind a plastic enclosure for the two 20# propane tanks. Just cut a small 2" square hole in the rear of it to access the lock in this box. The only additional thing done on this metal box was cutting four 1" holes in it for ventilation, 2 in the bottom and 1 on each side near the top.

+1 Offgrid I have also installed a chain that runs over the top of the battery boxes with a spring as a hold down and a lock so it may slow down any theft. The chain runs through a piece of PVC pipe that has been mounted to both of the tops.

| I was thinking one box would keep me from running a wire between the two boxes to link the two 6 volts in the series. Pius I'd have only one box to mount instead of two. |

I bought a box from this guy for my two Group 27 deep cycle batteries. Works well and fit across my tongue behind the propane tank without hassle. The series jumper just runs between the two boxes, not a problem. Its not really required to mount the boxes. Just set them in the rack and strap them down. I recently switched from a single 12V to two 6V batteries and used the same box. I made two lock assemblies using steel flat bars, 1/8" x 1-1/2" and painted them with flat black spray paint intended for truck beds. I bent them by using a vice and hammer. There are locks at top and bottom. It may not be totally theft-proof, but it will definitely slow someone down. In fact, our Ring camera caught someone in the dark pulling up to our driveway, getting out to look at our batteries, and then walking away.  |
