Any ideas what this is?  I was greasing the bearings and noticed this. Appears to be a clip of some sort. it moves fairly easily side to side but is connected to something.  I didn't see anything like this the other side,so I'm not sure what to make of it.  Appreciate any thoughts.

What you have is a cotter pin that runs through the axle; it purpose is to hold the castle nut in place which keeps the wheel and bearings tensioned properly.  You will need either needle nose pliars or sidecut pliars to remove and replace with a new one.

Better make sure there is a cotter pin on the other side as well as castle nuts normally don't come as a 'nylock.'  Without the cotter pin holding the castle nut in place the wheel could eventually fall off the axle . .  . not good.
