Okay I want to make sure I understand the reverse polarity for the solar panel. I purchased a Zamp solar waterproof port (see pic below). My solar panel is a Zamp solar brand too. If I connect the waterproof port (POS on the battery (red wire) and NEG to the battery (black wire), should I be good to go? I read about this reverse polarity, but my wire that I will connect to the battery is only two wires, red and black. TIA

Do you have a multimeter? If not you should get one for your travelling toolbox. What you plan to do should have the correct polarity but it's always good to verify with a meter before connecting. You should also place an inline fuse in the leg between the battery pos terminal and the connector, as close to the battery as possible. The fuse should be sized to protect the wire:

If the fuse is not at the battery end of the cable it's useless. If you get a short that is where the high current will come from. Solar modules don't create high currents when the get shorted, so they won't blow the fuse. If you short the battery though you will melt the insulation off and potentially have an electrical fire, so the fuse needs to be at that end. ------------- 1994 Chinook Concourse 1995 RV6A Experimental Aircraft 2015 Rpod 179 - sold |
