Topic: R Pod Outrigger Debacle

Subject: R Pod Outrigger Debacle

The wife and I plan on retiring in the next year or so we decided to pull the trigger on a 2107 178. We
purchased R Pod in February from a dealer in Green Bay WI and dragged it home to the far east side of Michigan, near the Blue Water Bridge. It's been in storage, so last weekend I backed it in the driveway so the wife could give the Pod a "deep clean" as she likes to call it. My wife walks out of the garage with rubber gloves and bucket in tow and says, "why's the trailer leaning so much"? This was my introduction to the outrigger debacle. Thank goodness for Google and You Tube. I placed four calls to Forest River looking for outriggers, with no response. I then called a local R Pod dealer trying to find outriggers. He informed me that he has two orders from February waiting to be filled from FR and says they're on back order. He suggested trying to find a shop that could fabricate them. A local shop said they could make them and asked me to draw a sketch with the measurements and they would put a price together for me. After work that day, as I was under the Pod taking measurements Forest River called back.  I told her I was looking for outriggers. She said they do have some in stock but asked if I had any pictures showing the problem and if the floor was sagging inside. I told her yes and yes and that it looked like there were signs of water penetration at the wall and floor, next to the cubby under the fridge. She said, "it sounds like we may have to have you bring your trailer in so we can take care of this". I asked her if FR was trying to make things right with this problem, and she said, yes. She asked me to email her with pictures and she would get back with me. As I am typing this, FR emailed me asking for the last seven numbers of my VIN. I really hope they can fix the problem. Just thought this info may help others.

I'll keep you posted

Thanks GG, I’ll keep that info in mind. I’m hoping that FR will fix it. I really don’t want to mess with this unless I have to. My biggest concern is how badly the floor is bent and the fact that water is penetrating inside.

Good luck with your situation, although I fail to see how this is a "debacle". It sounds like it's being handled well.

A good way to see if you have an active leak is to get a wood moisture meter and test various places where you can press it into the wood in the floor or wall perimeter. Sometimes it's hard to tell visually if things are getting wet until it's obviously discolored or rotted.   The meters are quite inexpensive on Amazon.

Rover Pod, you're correct saying it's being handled well. I titled that post incorrectly. Maybe I should have titled it "There is hope for the Outrigger Debacle"?

Thanks, Off Grid. I have a moisture meter arriving from Amazon today. Years ago, I had to use a moisture for work from time to time. I'm very familiar with water problems. I'm pretty sure there's more damage hidden behind the wall.

I have he same problem with my 2019 190.

Who at FR did you talk to?  Tina?

From what I am told expect this to take year to get resolved.

Has there been any documentation of this being an issue with the smaller 177?  Ours is 11 years old and still in excellent condition, no sag when the slide is out.

I think the issue is that they went to a bigger slide which added weight but they didn't add any structure to support the extra weight but don't quote me.

I did a bunch of research on this issue last fall before fixing my 2017 179. Not a few people commented on the video fix I posted on YT. The feedback seems that this is somewhat isolated to 2016-2019 models.

Oh yeah I saw your video when looking for a solution to another issue and then started looking at mine b/c that might explain some oddities that I was seeing in my unit(for example the driver side fender has always been lower and scraping the tire).  I emailed FR using your form letter.  I was however told that the brackets where only preventative.  They sent me to the warranty department which asked for pics which I sent.  I was told they would get back to me once they had a plan in place.  I had to ask multiple times how long it would take to hear back.  Was eventually told 6-8 weeks after also emailing my dealer and RPOD on facebook.

I'd be glad if they take it back to the factory and fix it...

Hey Peterk, I think you asked earlier if I spoke with Tina at FR. I left messages with Rachiel in parts. The nice lady that called me back was Susan. Not real sure what dept she's in. I believe that email Susan sent me asking for pics, copied Rachiel and Tina. Tina (in warranty) was the one that asked for my VIN info. Sounds like she now has the ball and is running with it.

When did you start your process and was that a conversation with Tina regarding the 6-8 weeks, and was the timeline for "we'll get back with you" or what?  Please keep me in the loop.

You also mentioned the brackets (outriggers?) were only preventative. Did FR say what else needs to be done?

I also am hoping they take mine back to FR and fix it

Hey Pilot Podder, I can't see in the pic, but are you John Marucci?

I think we paid around $17 or $18 each. I placed 4; one each under the rollers under the slide out. Shipping, tax, title and dealer prep came to a bit over $90 (IIRC).

I started about 2 weeks ago.  6-8 weeks from when they get the info that they want until they formulate the plan.  I have been told by several people not to expect the fix to happen anytime soon...

I don't know what the plan will be.  Since it was so difficult to get a time-frame I figured I had better not ask...  I am not sure what else you can do other than jack the floor up and put more support under it.  Unless they plan to replace the entire floor which seems unlikely.

I am wondering if John and others posted videos and photos of this problem and then people started checking and complaining to FR and they realized they had a much bigger problem than they realized?

I just started my process today requesting an outrigger kit. I have maybe a 1/4” drop as of now. They also requested pics, vin, and tow vehicle info. Following and will post updates.

Most likely they are going to put you in the warranty work pipeline and they have no clue when they will be able to fix it.

I sent my info and pics for my 178 to Tina about a month ago. I reached out to her last week looking for an update. Her response was that they were not scheduling warranty service for 178's just yet but would hope they would be picking up my coach around the end of July and have it for about 4 weeks.

So, it sounds like they schedule the service work my model. I had no idea that they were going to pick up my coach. I'm glad I don't have to drive 5 hours one way to drop it off and another picking it up.

I'll keep you posted.

I ask for an update every 30 days for my 190 and I always get a snippy response.

Update! They’ll be sending me an outrigger kit. They wanted to verify that there was not excessive deflection or damage, so I sent a bunch of pics. I also went the extra mile to describe what I’ve done to the trailer for maintenance and improvements so they’d know I’m a capable DIYer. Catching bees with you honey!

I mean I asked for the brackets and was just going to do it myself...I was told no.  There is probably 3/4" drop over 5" so that is pretty drastic in my book...

Sounds like more of a “repair” in their minds. My deflection was much smaller. Good luck to you.

Hey Glue Guy,
I just stumbled across this post and have a question for you.  Did you provide spec's for them to create the outriggers or was it something that they already had spec's for and you just had to order?  How long ago did you get the?

Since I'm going to be in the Fenton, MO area in a couple of months was thinking I could maybe order and pick them up and save some $$.

TIA.

We ordered them back in February. They told me via email that they were making outriggers for both the 179 and 180. I suggest you call them at 636-600-1171 to find out if they can accommodate you.

I just noticed the slide side wall on our 2018 RP-180 is beginning to sag. I contacted the local dealer (Avalon RV in Medina, OH) and asked about purchasing the outriggers. They did not have them in stock, but took my order for 6 of them on 4/11/2023, and said they would have them drop-shipped to my home address. The cost was $7.54 each plus tax and shipping.

Today, 4/14/2023, the package containing the 6 outriggers arrived!

I plan to install these myself, per the helpful instructions posted by John Marucci in this video:

I'll post my results here when done.
