Hello Pearl
Welcome to the forum.  You will find lots of nice people here who have hundreds of collective years of RV experience. Everyone is happy to help and offer advice.
the 179 is a very popular model.  there have been some major modifications made by different owners.  Use the search function and look for 179 mods.  we have had our 179 for almost 5 years and love it.  We have made a lot of improvements and have posted many of them.  also look at posts by StephenH who has done many mods to their 179.
Hope you enjoy your RPod.
Safe travels
Vann

Wow... thank you everyone.
I am a new camper owner.  I have never towed a camper, but I will be learning.  Unfortunately, the dealership where I got my SUV has my AFT Cooler on back order till June 2.  :(  So I haven't even had a chance to "practice"...

Best of luck with your new camper.  I didn't know they called travel trailers "campers" until I went to register ours when we moved to CT late last year.  In any event, you'll find many interesting discussions and useful information about your RPod here.

Pearl, as a fellow R-Pod 179 owner, I highly recommend the counsel you will get from this group. There is a lot to learn when you are new and I can attest to the patience and knowledge from the people who regularly contribute on this forum. All the best!

Hello Pearl,
Welcome and congratulations on your "new to you" RPod 179. I hope you have many fun adventures and make many great memories with it. We have enjoyed ours very much and have many thousands of miles of travel with it.

Vann mentioned me, so you can find my mods using the link in my signature. Other helpful hints:

1. Use the advanced search feature. The default search only searches posts newer than six months. By using the advanced search, you can search posts that are older.

2. Posting pictures: Look at the icon bar above the text entry box. You will see one that looks like two overlapping squares with an arrow pointing up and right. Click on that and it will take you to the advanced editor which has more functions. An icon with a picture of a tree will appear. That is the one to use to post pictures. You can browse for a picture, upload it to the forum, and then paste it into your post. This works best if you scale the pictures beforehand. I use the freeware GIMP to scale pictures to 800x600. This also reduces the file size that needs to be uploaded. You can use any image editor that lets you scale pictures for this purpose.

3. Questions:  Don't be afraid to ask. If you tried searching and can't find an answer ask. Chances are someone has the answer you need.

4. Most important: Have fun and enjoy your travels with your girls.

As for the ATF cooler, if you are towing to get to a local campground, you should be okay as the terrain around Brockport isn't mountains. I know because I grew up not that far west of there and am currently about 10 miles from Brockport. See private message.

Not sure what SUV you have but if the dealer recommends a transmission cooler you might want to inquire about your vehicle warranty prior to doing any towing. If the trans cooler is a manufacturer requirement you might be voiding your warranty if ti tow without it.

I have a Honda Passport.
Also, found out I have to have a curt echo.  Apparently I have electric brakes on the camper?
I have a lot to learn. Wink

If you have an AWD, your towing capacity (5000 lbs) for your trailer gives you a good margin of safety.  If you have only FWD, you are likely to exceed the weight limit for safe towing.  State laws vary regarding brake requirements for trailers, but the 179 is in the class of trailers requiring a braking system in all states.  It has electric brakes which require a brake controller in your Passport.  Your Curt Echo should do fine for that purpose.

One of the things you will need to become familiar with is balancing the weight in your trailer.  Here is a video that illustrates what can happen if you have too much weight aft:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2fkOVHAC8Q - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2fkOVHAC8Q
You may also want to check with your dealer to see if a weight distribution hitch can be used with your Pasport.  It makes the ride much more comfortable and many on the market also serve as anti-sway devices.

Yes, the trailer has brakes and you do need a brake controller. You don't necessarily need the Curt controller. There are others that will also work. However, I just took a look at information on the Curt Echo, and it looks like it would be the simplest to install and use.

It was nice meeting you. Hopefully, it won't be long before the cooler arrives and the tow package can be installed.

Yes, it was nice meeting you both. Amazing mods to your rig. Trying to remember where you said you got the 2 steps.

When we lifted our 177 we opted for the Stromberg-Carlson 2 step off EBay.  That was 5 years ago - price was $249.  Has worked out well.

This is like the one I installed. I did have to modify it a little by notching out the back for the frame so it would sit back and not have a gap between the door and the step.
