We bought Melamine dishware for camping years ago as they are virtually indestructible, and today I find out they are not microwaveable. Since the R-pod has a microwave we are now looking to replace them with something safe to use in the microwave. Looking at Corningware dishes and I was wondering if anyone else here has any suggestions, or has anyone had trouble with them?

I bought Corelle dinnerwear for our r-pod and its been trouble-free for the past two years.  Its microwave safe and oven safe (to 400 degrees) and virtually indestructable.  I installed some wire corner shelves on their side to keep them organized in our upper cabinet.

Your organizer sounds like a great ideal.

We use heavy-duty "disposable" plates,  I think they are from Hefty.  We've been using the same set for years.  Same goes for the "disposable" utensils, we got the heavy-duty versions and wash them like the plates.  Very light, microwaveable, and if one does get damaged and must be thrown out its not big deal.

I didn't want a whole set of dishes in the pod so we bought a set (2 pack) of microwave safe plates at Walmart.  They look and feel like melamine.  We do use two real melamine cereal bowls but I don't need to put those in the microwave.  I have glass measuring cup I can heat small things in for that.

We bought melamine plates from Walmart last fall just before we drove out to get our pod and it does say Microwave Safe and Dishwasher Safe Top Rack Only.  There's a symbol that says "Not Oven Safe" so I guess that just means it's okay for the microwave as long as the food doesn't get too hot.  Our unit didn't come with a microwave so I haven't been able to verify whether the plates are truly microwave safe or not.  The plates and bowls were a great deal at 1.67@ compared to similar quality ones at the picnic/fancy housewares shops that were $8-18@.

If we do add a microwave in the future, we would probably us a glass pyrex dish of some sort or Corelle dish for heating things up.

I bought Corelle for our camper too.  Fairly lightweight and can be put in the microwave or if we put hot food on them (like hamburgers off the fire) it will not be a problem.  They generally do not break when dropped either unless it is on cement.  Waited for them to go on sale for $12 a set on Dec 26th!  I also bought a large Corelle bowl to heat up food too.

Our "melamine", microwave safe plates do work well in the microwave.  Putting hot food on them is no problem either.  We wanted just enough dishes to do the job and not one more.  Tongue
