Pershing State Park is nice and quiet but only has 38 sites, on US 36 about 1 3/4 hrs. from KC and probably about the same for drdrew. Don't how long for you Hawkeye's. A little further east is Long Branch State Park with 72 sites and the lake, just outside of Macon, MO. Never been there though, but still in the center of everyone.

Kansas City is about 3 hours from us, but that is ok.  We make the trip for the Chiefs and the Royals, so we can make it for Podders!  I do mean Labor Day, but we hope to come down and meet some of you before then!  We want to go back to Weston when the weather clears up.  I love the live Irish music at O'Malleys.

Lots of other possibilities also:
Public Campgrounds:
Watkins Mill State Park (near Kearney, MO)
Weston Bend State Park (near Weston)
Smithville Lake (near Smithville - Clay County Parks)
Lake Jacomo and Blue Springs Lake (near Blue Springs - just East of KC - Flemming Park, Jackson County Parks)

Private campgrounds:
Pony Express RV Park (between Cameron and St Joseph, MO)
Trailside RV Park (Grain Valley, MO - Right on I-70, not very peaceful)

The main negative is that it is a holiday weekend and reservations, while they can be made 6 months in advance - coming up next week - are limited in the state parks.

The final choice is Weston Bend State Park, near Weston, MO (just north of KC off I-29), for the Labor Day weekend. If you care to be there, reservations are open as of today for a limited # of sites. Several sites are available on a first come-first served basis. This is the link to the park. Reservations may be made online.

It will be a beautiful, early fall, Missouri weekend.

You have so many beautiful options right close to home in Georgia. How soon will you be able to get on the road again? It snowed a bit here last night and is supposed to be below freezing for a couple of more nights before it warms again. 70's one week, 20's and 30's the next. I've had my 177 out once this spring, but it is back in storage for another couple of weeks for certain.

Labor Day of 2011?  Is this trip still in the works?  Straight North from my location in Texas.  Just a few miles.

Why don't I make this trip the first R-Pod get together.?  I'm just a newbie.  Then I would be a twobie, right?

If you click on the blue font for "Enable BBcodes . . . ", what pops up in the left hand column will show you what code you have to type in for the font, or the image, or the special text (such as bold or italics) that you want to show up in your post.  For instance, take a look at the first code in the left hand column if you want to use bold type.  For the letters you want to be bold, first type in the code that is within the brackets - be sure to include the brackets, too.  Then type what you want to say in bold and end it with the final code that is in brackets - again, be sure to include the brackets.  In other words the changed font or text will be what you typed between the two bracketed codes.

Is this about as clear as mud? Ermm  (And a little ridiculous since you can just click on the capital B for bold above the message box you are typing in! -- but it is useful for OTHER codes.)

You just have to play around with it.  I've screwed it up a couple of times and had to delete or edit my posts, but eventually I got it right.   Mainly, I was trying to make my SIGNATURE look different from the rest of my post.  But it is fun to put different color fonts in your post, or whatever.

I am still planning on being there and have reservations at the State Park for Labor Day weekend also. Weston is a pretty neat little town. We are going up there tomorrow (not camping) for the First Annual Weston Bluegrass Festival http://www.westonbluegrass.com/ - http://www.westonbluegrass.com/  in town, and again in a few weeks for the Audubon Society's "Wings Over Weston" at the state park. We are going to camp for that one. I am anticipating a good time!

We got out last weekend to Smithville Lake, Crow's Creek Campground (county park) just north of Kansas City. Quiet weekend, rain was predicted, but sunshine is what happened. Only 20 or so trailers/rv's/tents in a camprgound with over 400 sites. Beautiful and quiet. The only thing I forgot was my camera! It was also the first time I tried to use the hot water heater . . . worked just fine, but the hot came out of the cold faucet. Minor glitch that I will fix next time I have it out of storage, or not, now that I know which one to turn on!

Thanks for the tip, Long Branch State Parks looks quite nice, with some long hiking trails. I'll put it on my list to check out. MO has some nice state parks, located all throughout the state. The ones north don't have the dramatic scenery as those in the Ozarks and Bootheel areas, but, again, are very nice.

agreed tom.  i spend much of my time in the southern ozarks, i absolutely love it.  unfortunately camps were flooded all the way up to the I44 state parks this weekend (meramec, bennett) so i had to go north to be somewhere dry.  i spent the weekend before in eminence photographing the extraordinary high water.

I had friends that were supposed to spend 2 weeks at Bennett starting last weekend, I haven't heard what they did instead. They are one of those lucky couples whose address is their trailer. They follow springtime around the country. Tough life! Love to see your photographs, do you use webshots, or some other online sharing site? Eminence is a beautiful area, driven through, but never stopped more than a brief while. Sad about the dike destruction along the Mississippi last night, but I understand the need.

We spent the weekend at Weston Bend State Park, north of Kansas City, at the Audubon Society's "Wings over Weston" festival. Marvelous park, good hiking and biking, and during the migratory times of spring and fall, there is an amazing variety of birds not usually seen in this area. Every time I visit this park I am more impressed. It is not a park to just drive through, one would see nothing of interest, but when one gets out and walks the trails and watches the forest canopy, it is simply amazing.

There is also a paved trail that we took to walk to the main street of Weston, MO (a pre-Civil War town, and a campsite of the Corps of Discovery in July, 1804), about 1.5 miles, pretty flat and nice, as opposed to the biking trail which has some very steep hills (a strenuous, but healthy walk).

I am really looking forward to the Labor Day get together, every site in the campground is wooded and beautiful, some are quite secluded.

Fantastic, just a short drive down I-29. Really looking forward to meeting you. We will be on the right side of the road, shortly after you pull into the campground (easy to find, there is only one entrance to the park), near the camp host trailer . Of course, it isn't hard to spot an R-pod. It is a nice park, and we will anticipate a great fall weekend. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about Weston Bend, or other things to do in the area.

How is the flooding situation there at Weston?  or is there any flooding at all?

Posted By: Goose
Date Posted: 22 Jun 2011 at 12:23pm
The state park sits high on the river bluff so that will not flood, but the town of Weston sits low so there could be a problem. Right now all the flooding is north of St Joe but all that water has to come south at some point in time. Every day on the news they have shown how towns down stream from St. Joe have been getting ready for the high water. I have not seen anything on what Weston is doing.   Goose

Weston, the town, sits a bit back from the river since it changed course several years ago, It also mostly sits on a hill, except for the lower part of downtown. Should be OK. Weston Bend, the state park, also sits on a bluff. The lower part of the park, right on the river bank will be underwater I think, but the bluffs, main hiking/biking trails, and campground are well above the river and will be untouched.

It certainly is a mess along the river a little further north, and they are predicting the high water to reach here this weekend. In spite of all preparations, parts of Parkville, and other riverfront areas will be under water. It happens every few years, and people here are pretty well prepared.
