Donna and I have a 2011 RP-172, we have done several mods to it, battery upgraded to a group 27, longer dump tube holder with a 15 ft hose, 4 inch lift kit. lp gas tank gauge. Oxygenics shower head, clear cover on the fantastic fan, LED bulbs in critical spots. I like the lay out of the 181-G because ot the queen bed in the front and the small eat on counter and the garage, but our only complaint about the 172 is that we sleep on the short queen in the back (we have a 4 inch double firm foam mattres on top of the factory cushions, I also made a folding 1/8 inch luan plywood folding dividier between the factory cushions and the foam topper, this spreads out the load, It takes less than 5 minutes to convert from dinette, to the bed. The bed with the topper sleeps as good or better than our home bed. I am about to talk myself out of trading. If and when we get grandchildren the 172 has 2 bunks in the front and the 181G has only the queen. What should We do ?

My thoughts are if it is "not broken why fix it". If the 172 has been working for you both and in the future you would have the bunks  if you have grandchildren, my personal thoughts is why change. We have thought about selling our camper two times and after thinking it over have decided to keep it. Our 171 is payed for and even if we do not use it much its there when we want to use it. And we have done a lot of mods so we are able to enjoy it more when we do go camping.

The garage makes (for me) the camping experience so much better, as it keeps you outside more and involved socially with fellow campers.  The garage is just an amazing feature and worth the change.

Grandkids can sleep in a tent ;).

Just shaing an opinion that your consideration isn't too crazy....to each is own.

Good luck either way.

I wouldn't worry about the mods.. in fact if I was considering a different floorplan, I know I would be also considering mods on it...

I agree, the grandkids could sleep in a tent or the dome.. that is what we did as kids.. mom and dad in the camper, 3 boys who thought that was just dumb... (we of course all now have campers of our own.. lol)

and, just to add.. we really like the 181G floor plan.

We were really excited when the 18* series came out too but then realized that we would have to give up the back window we currently have in our 152.  We've come to really love the view out of the back window of our 152 as we've found some really scenic campsites that back onto lakes and gorges over the past year.  Having our morning coffee and tea in bed whilst looking at the view is one of our favourite things to do while 'podding.

We also sleep on the dinette (one of our mods was to make it into a quasi Full-sized bed) and have kept it in bed-mode for all of the 2011 season.  Our planned mod is to do loosen the upper bunk and enable it to lift up so we can either have some seating on the lower bunk or even a mini-dinette.

How much you use the garage feature depends on where you camp and how you camp (and how your grandkids camp) Wink

Our 172 actually has 3 windows in the rear dinette, queen area, one on the back and 2 on the sides, I wish there was one in the door, I might put a peep hole in there, I am starting to change my mind about trading for a 181g, I like the floor plan but Donna said something about if you think you are trading my pod there may be an object broken off in an area where you set down. I don't think she was talking about the couch.

Some have installed this in the door. It looks easy and I think the style of the round window matches the shape of the rpod very well:

I have been watching this product for a while, now and I noticed today that the price came down from around $65 to $40 shipped. I am definitely pulling the trigger.

I have toyed with the idea of several times of trading or upgrading out 2009 Rpod 171 to something different but each time stepped back from it.  The camper we have works for us and is paid for.  Sure it would be nice if it had this or that but I know if I was to make the move now something would come out next week that I would look at and say I wish ours had that also so the ugly trading woiuld begin again.  Plus my better half would throw me out to the dog house.  You need to look at what works best for you.

I was thinking that if we traded up to a 18* series, we would still probably do some mods to the garage area along these lines:

Rpod camper, I am with you, I got an email from Bigdaddys rv in London Ky, they offered me $5000 on our rpod still under warranty toward their RP-181G for $15200, I think that is a good price on their 181G, but Our paid for RP-172 looks really good all of the sudden. What the heck, it takes 5 minutes to change the dinette to the short queen, and with the double foam mattress ( I keep it rolled up and on the top bunk) so what, we are out there to slow down, enjoy the country and to relax. Sorry Bigdadys rv in london Ky go fish. We are keeping our paid for sweet, eclectic , hippie looking, sun fun lovin, we are heading out, I love the sound of the wind through the pines, and cooking outside, and no phone ringing PAID FOR RP-172
