Date Posted: 02 Mar 2013 at 6:11pm
For the past 2 years, several Central Midwest (MO, AR, IA, KS, NE) R-podders have met up for the Labor Day Weekend at Weston Bend State Park, just north of Kansas City, MO, just off I-29 a few miles, near Weston, MO. This is a lovely state park (biking, hiking, birding), less that a mile from a nifty town with lots of great restaurants, pubs, and interesting shops. The park is less than an hour from almost all the attractions of Kansas City, and there is always lots going on over the holiday. (See previous posts in this forum from last year for a list of the many possibilities.) Sites have electricity, water and a dump station are available at the entrance to the campground.

RESERVATIONS ARE OPEN AT:  http://mostateparks.com/  8/30 - 9/2/2013

We are in Site 11, pretty much all the sites are nice and wooded. I hope there will be others who join us. Last year we shared several meals (not mandatory, of course) and it was great fun to meet everyone. If there are others interested, post here or in the other forum or on the facebook page. We can send more information as time approaches.

Awesome! Looking forward to seeing you. I can hardly wait to get away from camp driveway. We were planning on Roaring River State Park soon, but predicted snow and sub freezing temps are causing a bit of re thinking on that one.

New 177 owner here. Just joined the forum less than a month ago. We are thinking of joining you labor day weekend. We live on the eastern side of Missouri so it would be quite a trek for a weekend. Getting together with other "podders" would make the trip worth it, though. I'll let you know as soon as we decide. Would love to meet other podders!

We would love to meet you. It has been great fun in the past with some folks driving 4-5 hours. There are a lot of things to do in Weston and Kansas City, the park is nice, the campground small and usually quiet. One evening the Camp Host had to come and remind us R-podders that it was time to quiet down. My wife and I generally just hang out in the park, bicycle into Weston, or go for a hike. For us, meeting other podders has been the best!

HOPE YOU CAN MAKE IT! My wife is from St. Louis (South County), are you close to there at all?

Glad they are back up there.. we had a million of them spend most of the winter in the bean field north of us.. They are noisy.. and other things.

I'm going to say that they are like the Snow Geese that parked for a week in the field of winter wheat that was about 3 inches tall, they left big green blobs over all the cars and trucks. You really had to worry about getting out of the car to walk to the truck as you could get bombed.  Goose
Very pretty to watch from the safety of the cab.

We have a unique chance to see one of the rarest birds in North America in the Whooping Cranes that have started migrating on their own from here to Florida with the sandhills.  After a number of attempts to guide them with aircraft etc. the scientists have a few released with wild sandhills.  We saw them in the fall when they were getting ready to go, and I think I saw two of them in a flock of sandhills Friday.  I hope they are successful getting some numbers again.

Doc Tom, We live about an hour south of St. Louis. Just figured the mileage for the trip and it's right at 650 round trip. That's a lot of miles for a weekend trip. I would love to get together with other podders and get to know some of you, but I'm not sure it will be this Labor Day. :(

Yes it is a long way. It takes us about 4 hours to get to my wife's mother' place in S. County (without towing). It would be a long trip, but lots of fun. If you ever do come through KC, PM me and perhaps we can meet up to say hi.

Thanks, Doc Tom. We'll take you up on that some day. So, it's the second day of spring and I'm leaving for work this morning. The temperature was 16 degrees. Our maiden voyage is supposed to be in two weeks. I'd better pack a winter coat. This is unusual for us this time of year and it's getting old. Just sayin'...Tongue

I understand, light snow and freezing rain coming down right now with a promise of 3-7 inches of snow tomorrow and Sunday. We were supposed to be leaving on our first outing in about 4 hours . . .

We just picked up our pod on July 9th - so we are pretty stoked to begin wearing that baby out!

What is the count up to now?

Site 8 is a fine site, pretty much in line with the rest of us. You will be right across the street from the camp host. One year he had to tell us to quiet down at 10 PM as we were keeping the children awake! Rowdy R-podders! The count is 5 for certain and another 2 possibles at this point. I have often been nicely surprised when one or two extras show up without having ever said a thing. The more the better.

We just love our Rpod, as I think everyone who has one does. It just gets better every time we go out. We have a week in Colorado coming up soon, and then two weeks in Wisconsin and Minnesota after Labor Day. The pod is in the drive right now, did a few small mods yesterday getting ready for Colorado. You will probably find that every time you see another pod you will discover something you can add to yours.

We often have at least our first meal together on Friday evening (sometimes other evenings also). Last year I treated to KC BBQ on evening one. If you are bicyclists there is an easy bike (or walking) trail into the town of Weston from one end of the park and it is a quaint little river town with lots of shops and good restaurants, a winery and a pub or two also. I don't remember where I posted it, but on this forum, or the Nation or on the Facebook page there is a list of other things to do nearby, but we usually just hang out in the park as we love to hike, bike and bird watch.

Ok Fellow 2013 Weston Bend Rpod Mini Rally attendees. There is a lot to see and do in Kansas City and the surrounding area. Here are a few things to consider if you get tired of just sitting around the park! Friday night we usually have dinner together, I will bring KC BBQ and baked beans. Feel free to add whatever you like. Last year most of us ended up spending evening meals and campfire time together, but that is not a requirement.

And there are probably around 100 other things of interest . . . Tina started mentioning them as soon as I posted the above. This list is just a start, several of the links will lead to other sites too. I left off a great nature center in St. Joseph, with mastodon fossils found in the area, right along side the MO River, and across the street from a Casino. There are several other casinos, great restaurants, a beautiful, state of the art, performing arts center (Kaufman Center), the Agricultural Hall of Fame, the National World War I Museum (fascinating), a NASCAR race track, great golf courses, other state, county and city parks, a brewery, Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, really just a ton of things. Living here, I often forget that KC is a place people come for their vacations.  If you have a special interest or want to know about anything special, just ask.

Furpod, nice link, and it is an interesting place. Thanks for adding it to the list. It looks like they would be open on Saturday.

The Royals are out of town until Monday when they have a home game.

If you like sports, Sporting KC (Soccer/Football) has a game on the 31st (I think, it is on the KC link) and they are often sold out, check ahead.  They are quite popular and the stadium is right next to a Cabela's.

I could be wrong, with additions and cancellations and some folks using more than one name, but we are at 10 or 11 at the moment. The weather forecast looks very warm, kind of like last year, but so far no major rain predicted. It has been hot here in the city. Weston Bend, under the trees will be cooler, and evenings and mornings have been pleasant!. Really looking forward to it. The pod is in the driveway all clean and ready, BBQ is on order, and we are READY!!! See you all on Friday!!!
