After four years of looking around for an some sort of RV to fit our lifestyle (tent camping) we decided that the R-Pod best fit. I am a 33 year Navy Vet. (retired now for 4 yrs.) Sandee, my wife, teaches at two local colleges in the science department, her background is geology and paletogist (never could spell that word).
We like to visit the National Parks ( visited 142 so far) and dig for gems, minerals and fossils. We belong to a National Parks club and each year the club holds a convention in a different part of the US. Last year the convention was at Apostle Islands in Wisconsin (Sandee home state) we spent an entire month visiting MN, WI & MI. Parks we visited were Isle Royale NP, Grand Portage NM Apostle Islands NS, Kewanaw NHA (spent 2 weeks in this area hunting for Lake Superior agates and copper), Pictured Rocks NS, SLeeping Bear Dunes and Potoski State park. All the time we camped in tents.
Tent camping is great, we had great weather but this year we will be visiting National Parks in GA, FL, MS, LA, AR( hunting for diamonds and crystals in this state), OK, MO and then back to WI for a visit with family. The convention this year will be at Shiloh National Battlefield.
We both grew up camping in a tent, but we figured we are getting a bit long in the tooth to be putting up with the heat. Live in Virginia Beach, VA and are used to the heat, but sleeping in a tent in the south in the summer is just a bit too much.
So we pulled the trigger today and bought a 2013, 177. We could not pass up the great price we were offered, who had a truck load of newer models inbound.
I have been reading the forums and have already found out I do not know anything. So I am making check lists of all this new stuff. I esp. like the modifications forum because Sandee has already mentioned a few she wants this site has been great.
Just wanted to introduce myself and say howdy.
Carl

Welcome to the world of R-podding!!

Check out the 2013 North Carolina rally in June at Raccoon Holler.
You might want to think about coming to that event.
You will get to see other R-pods and get some ideas for mods.

We have a 2011 181G and love it. We will be coming to the NC rally.

Raccoon Holler, sounds like it will be fun. Where do I find out about the details like the date, location etc. We just might be there is the timing is right. Sandee is putting the finishing touches on her PhD diseration and this would be a great event to let out al those years of research and writing.

Welcome.  Sounds like you will be making a similar trip to ours this summer, we'll be hitting most of the same states including AK for Crater of Diamonds.  As hot as that place is we'll be doing it for a few hours in the morning before cleaning up and getting on the road.

Doug- We will be at Craters of Diamond SP on 21,23 & 23 of July, possiably longer. Then a week in the Hot Springs area, hopfully we find a site at Hot Springs NP to camp out. If you will be in that area during that time please do let us know.

Sylvia- Thank you for the information. I did find the information about the event. Not sure we can make it just yet, but we still might be able to attended. Sandee has to teach that weekend but sometimes she can tweek her classes so we can sneak out for such things.

As we may be in Arkansas in June or July, just wondering if anyone has recently found any diamonds in the park? Perhaps we should just stay there for a few days instead of a quick trip to Branson!

Craters of Diamond state park website list every find at the park. Last month when I looked folks found a diamond almost every day. Our plan is to spend at least three days in the park. I understand you can also find MO agates in the tailing pile they have at the park. We like to dig in the dirt, find rocks, fossils and other goodies like this so a day digging for us is better than going to Branson. But we do want to visit Branson one day just to see what all the fuss is about.

Thank you all for your comments. Currently on the road, without Tricera-Pod. Thought I would do some tent camping but for two days now I have been unable to get a camp site in any National or state park. I kind of figured this might happen since I never made any reservations.
