Subject: Mounted a long sewer hose tube (and cleaned up)
Date Posted: 08 Jun 2013 at 10:58pm

I took the short sewer hose tube off soon after getting my pod 4 years ago.  Without the risers anything that was below the frame was a problem (I got a fold-up jack and took the original jack off, too).  Plus it wasn't long enough to hold anything.  Since then I've used a large plastic tool box to hold the sewer hose and accessories.  Not ideal since it was hard to get the hose in there and the box had to ride inside the pod.

With a big trip coming up I had to finally get this annoyance off of my checklist.  I ordered a 60" sewer tube from DWI, which is long enough to fit between the frame rails near the 171's sewer outlet.  I like the ends of the tube better than the old tube, both ends have a little knob and a door which swings open where the original screws open and closed which wasn't always easy.  This new one holds everything including the threaded adapter so I'm happy.  And no more tool box...   http://www.dwincorp.com/products/82/SUPER-TUBE - http://www.dwincorp.com/products/82/SUPER-TUBE

Some bonus shots of cleaning my roof, below.  This started out with a visit to a local Girl Scout fund raiser car wash mid-day where the TV and everything but the pod roof got a decent cleaning (they got a good donation and I grabbed a sponge to help, too).  In past years I've pulled out my 6 foot ladder and did the job on my driveway.  This was always just this side of suicide.  Plus I never could get the roof that clean because I just couldn't reach everything or get much pressure on the bad spots with a long-handled brush.  This year I decided to pull it around to my back porch where I could stand on the railing and half-lay on the roof so I could attack the roof with vengence, elbow grease, and some Oxy-clean.  As you'll see, the roof was disgusting but it is finally clean!  I did one side, turned the whole rig around, then did the other.

Wow, that's a serious roof cleaning!

Is it not recommended to walk on the pod roof? I've read you can walk on the roofs of some TTs, but not others. Obviously with the pod, you could only walk in the center section, if at all.

"Not at all" is my best guess.

Operating on the premise that "if it's not specifically permitted, it's likely not allowed", which sounds kind of
military, but which is probably the case.  If you read the spec's for the Surveyor Series, which is kind of the
next-step-up within the Forest River TT group, it mentions "full walk-on roof".  Nowhere in the R-Pod
literature is such a statement, to the best of my knowledge.

Tech-  Nice cleaning job!  Also, thanks for the sewer hose storage tube link.  I need to get on that mod.

Holy crap!  What did you park under to get the roof that dirty!

As my wife said "it is glowing!"  Since the pod is sitting in the shade and its been so cool I have the roof partially tarped to keep it clean for the next few weeks.  In the hour it sat in its parking spot it already had clumps of tree junk on it.  Censored

The pod roof is NOT rated to walk on, and there really isn't anywhere to walk anyway.  It feels a bit soft in spots, too.  The most I did was half-lay on the roof with most of my weight on the edge where there is support.

I should have added to my post above, you can order a custom size of 61" instead of the 60".  Same price and the mounting holes will still fit, just on the outer edges of the frame instead of the inside edges.

Oak trees and several others.  We are surrounded by trees which is great most of the time - until the sap and other stuff gets the cars and pod dirty.  Cry

Oxy-clean.  Wouldn't have thought of that one.

We have a bunch of oaks all around our Pod, so from late fall until early spring we get quite a bit of that same black filth on top of ours as well.

My least favorite Pod activity is the ladder twist and lean of death as I'm on the top step and stretching with a long car wash brush to scrub around the AC.  Just can't get the leverage to scrub it as good as I'd like!  Ouch

Exactly.  Then you start sliding down the curved edge and don't have anything to grab plus its all slick from water and soap.  Knowing what I know now, if my deck wasn't an option I would probably build some kind of collapsible 5 foot high platform.  Use my ladder to get on the platform, then wash the roof from the platform.

On the sewer tube... you said it mounts between the frame rails. Does that mean it screws to the floor? Or did you screw it to the rails with self tapping sheet metal screws?

I want one... 1

When are you coming to New Orleans?

I taped the tube in place, then marked the mounting holes, removed the tube and drilled the frame.  Then used self-taping screws.

We'll be in NO somewhere around July 10th-13th.  I don't have a copy of our schedule on this computer so I'll have to verify that later.

Techntrek, Do the screws and instructions come with the tube?

Also, I have a 90 degree fitting on my hose for easy insertion into dump station tank.  Do you have one on your hose? Does it fit / store in the tube? If not, what do you do/use?

Ps: I now keep my hose in tool box on front of Pod.

I'm going to do this but I have questions too. The Sanitube web site says that the R-Pod requires the 25.5 in tube but you went with the 60" tube. Because? I'm also going to move from the stock "slinky" to the RhinoFLEX sewer kit. I can't find info anywhere as to the stored length of the Rhino. Is that going to cause me to go with the longer tube? Thanks for your posts and all this help.

The 60 inch Sanitube contains the 15 foot RhinoFlex AND all the accessory fittings including the elbow. It even accept a clear 45 degree elbow, buts that's getting tight. The stock 60 inch tube can be mounted using #14 sheet metal screws, but positioning takes some care. A custom 61 or 62 inch tube would be easier, but you have to make it VERY clear to the manufacturer you don't want the standard tube. Returning a tube is a real pain. The old tube can be used for other accessories or things. I'm going to use it to carry a shorter hose for use with a "blue tank" when needed.

Charlie thanks much. So I'm just making sure that I understand before ordering. You paid $60 for the 60" tube right? $25 for the standard and an additional $35 for the 60".

Also, I see that you're TV is a Honda Pilot. What kind of gas mileage are you getting? I have trouble getting much better than 11MPG with my 2011 Pilot.

Chuck,
Don't remember exactly, but that sounds about right. The tube itself is fairly cheap, but shipping drives the cost way up. Most, if not all, of the extra $35 is for shipping. I thought that's crazy but I checked with UPS/FEDX and that's what it costs. The extra length tube is almost no extra cost, but shipping the extra length is $$$. They just cut the tube a bit longer and glue the end assemblies on.

Carefully measure the center-to-center distance between the frame rails. I measure close to 62". This will put the mounting holes in the centers of the rails. AND! Be sure to make it very clear on your order that you want 62" center-to-center mounting holes. I called the factory: they said no problem, same price. I wrote it on the email order too and referenced the guy by name. Guess what I got: 60". It works but it's harder and shipping the 60" tube back is a pain.

Gas mileage on the Pilot? Welcome to the RPOD towing club. Expect 9-12 mpg. Depends on speed and wind. The POD is like a parachute behind you despite the shape and "spoiler".

Happy podding,

Chuck,

Please verify your measurements before you order. I measured my 2013 RP-172. I expect they're the same as yours but it's worth a check. Center-to-center of the rectangular frame channels. The channels are nominally 2" so you'll have about +/- an inch to play with.

Neither, I had to scrounge the screws from my large "coffee can" collection.  No instructions, but none needed.  Just position the mounting holes where you want them, mark, and drill the holes in the frame.  Yes, my hose has the multi-threaded adapter which fits most campground sewer connections, the 90 degree elbow which fits into the mult-threaded adapter, and the standard camper connection.  I was worried the adapter wouldn't fit inside but it does.

25.5 inch is the length where the stock tube is mounted under the battery box.  60 inches is the length between the frame rails on the body of the pod.  My hose is way too long to fit in the stock tube but there is room to spare in the new tube.

Good idea!  So, I got one!  I added 4 drain holes and covered them with some plastic bug screen to keep the wasps out.  I used good old super glue to attach the screen.

Nice job, Techntrek! It's sparkly clean! Oxyclean is the bomb. I use it around the house for everything from laundry soap (which I mix myself) to bathtub cleaner, etc. We are on a septic tank so I am very careful about cleaning products. I use mostly natural stuff if anyone is interested in the recipes, let me know.

Travis, I hear another project in your future.... A platform!

Sounds like a house-mod for me instead of a Pod-Mod.  Would love to be able to clean the roof easier.

Here is what i come up with, at least for now. 5 inch pvc post cover with caps. I sealed the far end and will have a gasket on the end I open. the ends that are on my hose are 4 1/2 in and would not fit in the r pod holder.this makes it  so I can put the 90 and the pipe size adapter  in there to

I haven't mounted mine yet.  My Pod is out in the sun and it has been, and will be, in the mid to upper 90's.  I'll have to go see where it will best fit though.

Terry - nice mod of a mod!  I considered drilling several small holes, something too small for bees, but decided that any liquid would seep out on turns through the side doors.  They are fairly tight but not watertight.  If I find otherwise I can always drill later.

francoisfrogpod - I would be interested, my wife has been talking about using vinegar more for cleaning.

Craneman - that gray multi-threaded adapter is the part I wasn't sure would fit in the new tube, but does.  Just FYI for anyone that wasn't sure what part I was talking about.

So glad you posted this.  Why there was such a short tube installed ever.  Could you please post come pictures of how you place it underneath.   This is our first camper and still pretty new with it so just want to make sure that do it correctly.  Anyone with a 179 do this?  Is there anything I need to think about before installing.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
