We purchased a cast iron diffuser for the gas burners on the rPod because we found the flame level of the burners very hard to control, either blast or off essentially. The diffuser worked like a charm, providing very even heat and slowing the cooking process. No more burned corn cakes for us!

Which one did you get?  We used to have the Norpro ones in aluminum but found that they warp over time.  We now use a cast iron one and it stays flat.

Okay, how about toast? We have an old stove-top toaster that is a perforated metal circle with collapsible wires to hold the bread or other item. The problem is that if we use it, the smoke detector will go off. Unfortunately, our R-Pod lacks a vent hood to take care of this. So, how does one make toast and save his/her hearing? (This is when AC is not available to power an electric toaster).

You pull the battery out of the smoke detector, just like everybody else does when cooking... Wink

Some owners have used a shower cap, placed over the detector while cooking also.

A shower cap is one option. I'll have to look for one. Eventually, I'd like to figure out a way to add a hood to the stove area, even if it only was one that used filters and recirculated the air inside instead of venting it outside.

I sometimes open the window behind the sink and stove and then turn on the FF.. it does a great job.. But the space is so small, it doesn't take much to reach whatever concentration is needed to set the thing off..

Turn on the bathroom fan.
